Minister, can we please help the children with scoliosis that have been on a waiting list for well over three years now.
Thanks you for your question, deputy. The answer is no. We won’t make money on treating sick children. That’s why we started to operate on health, well children. The profits are great and the kids usually recover faster because they were not really sick in the first place. It’s a win win. Except for the kids. But who cares about them.

>Nearly 80 percent of hip operations at a Children’s Health Ireland hospital were unnecessary
What the actual fuck.

I have very serious quality and expertise concerns about Irish health care.
Even “good” migrant staff and doctors become complacent after a while and just join the system.

I doubt money is a driving factor here. Everyone involved gets paid a salary, not per-operation.
This is more than likely a consultant (or two) who follows his own ego more than clinical guidelines and believes things like, “doing it now will save trouble down the line”
A recurring problem in Ireland unfortunately, where you get some consultants who think they’re God and their opinion is the only thing that matters. So they push patients into treatment which in unnecessary or sometimes downright incorrect.

The Ditch haters have been vocal enough on everything else they produced. Why are they silent on this one?
Could it be that the mental gymnastics needed to defend this corruption are less palatable than, for instance, the gymnastics needed to defend corruption in the Planning and political spheres?
I’ve always admired, and defended, The Ditch for their principled stance on exposing corruption, regardless of subject matter. Others have often attacked them for, presumably, the same reasons. Where are those nay-sayers now? Why aren’t they attacking The Ditch this time?
Their absence here indicates a lack of moral courage. If they truly believed The Ditch are so vile they’d come out and say it again, now, in this thread about causing unnecessary suffering to small children.
The Ditch’s usual targets are politicians and officials in less emotive areas. Dropping this one like a bomb on their enemies was quite clever. Only a ghobshite will argue that it was an unfair/immoral investigation/witch-hunt when the outcome is so positive.
I’m sure the haters will return when the targets return to more familiar territory. When they do I’ll be there pulling this case outta my ass and slapping them in the face with it.

I’m in my 30’s but had five or six hip operations in Cappagh as a teenager. I would well believe this article. As an adult, I recognise I had an unusual condition and was used as somewhat of a guinea pig, and shown off to medical students without being given a chance to properly consent.
