As far as im aware, there havent been any new contracts for the F-35’s.

You should buy the best fighter out there. I have no idea what that is, but that’s the one you want.

A better idea, buy those F-35s and finally rip them open and see what’s going on in the electronics and then use it for new European jets.

But seriously, why isnt EU buyin european jets? I doubt they are they no good.

Ok, look, I’m as pro European as the next guy, but seriously?
I don’t think you understand how ahead of the game the F-35 is. It’s one of a kind, and leagues ahead of any other fighter jet. There’s no European jet that can compete with it. An F-35 in a fight with another jet isn’t a fight, it’s an execution. The F-35 will knock the other jet out of the sky before it even realises there’s a hostile aircraft around.
Yes, we should be buying European, but in this situation there is no fully European equivalent. The F-35 does have some European components in it though. The UK, Italy and The Netherlands all contribute parts to the F-35 program.
We’re not going to see a European equivalent of the F-35 until the UK, Italy and Japan’s GCAP and France, Germany and Spain’s FCAS, but it will be several years before these come into service.

I find it interesting, that the F-35 is not built exclusively with parts from the US.
A lot of components are produced by the UK, Denmark, Canada, Australia… possibly more.
This goes so far, that Denmark blocked the export of F-35 to Israel by the US for some time. (The US seems to have found a way around it.)
But still, if the US really breaks with all its NATO allies, it looks like they would no longer be able to produce new F-35 and maintain their F-35 fleet. So, the potential problems goes both ways.

F35 is actually an international effort, including Europeans

Then we need to manufacture the engine and electronics in Europe, otherwise the US will have the power to hindrance use of the planes.

Bro, F35s? I am happy if they don’t call in the Russians again…

Or get the F-35, but replace all electronics with home-grown electronics like Israel does.

Which European fifth generation fighter would you suggest be purchased instead? There isn’t one.
The F-35 program was intended to share the development costs of a Fifth generation fighter among multiple partners and it has been a wild success. There are over 1,000 F-35 fighters built, with more each year as production becomes more efficient; 110 were built in 2024 and up to 190 will be built in 2025.
European partners that helped fund the development of the F-35 are benefiting from a share in the industrial work of manufacturing the fighter- keeping their industrial workforce employed and their ensuring their technical knowledge in the latest technology. European workers make parts, assemble, and maintain the F-35.
Rather than try to uniltaterally disarm Europe at the precise moment when Russia is more of a threat than ever, it would be wiser to pressure European politicians to increase support for Ukraine in the immediate term and recommit to keeping the various European 6th generation fighter development programs funded.
This unfortunate situation we’re all in is due to the imbalance in military power between the United States and Europe- every country has a buffoon for a leader eventually, Trump is America’s equivalent of Berlusconi/Zemen/Milosevic/etc. Keeping European weapons funded is key to redressing this imbalance, and ensuring that no since country is a point of failure.

you would need to figure out what kind of nuclear weapons you can put on the alternatives first.

Go straight to an AI stealth fighter. Simpler, doesn’t need to be as safe or reliable, doesn’t need all the different versions, avoids all the human interface factors. The Neuron demonstrator is already flying. Now it could be almost totally autonomous.

Yeah that’s not gonna change anything, f-35s are too valuable to pass.

I reckon a big part of Trump’s push for Europe to up their defence spending is to pump more cash into the US military industrial complex.

There is no other option to the f35 currently. Its a great deal. Pricewise. But the next Generation should be european.

The reality is that European companies can’t deliver anything before 2030. They have full queue of contracts. We need to fuck Putin now not in 10 years.
