2.5 billion is about 2 weeks usage for Ukraine. So yes, they need a lot of money, and they better get it.

It’s actually a pretty small amount of money overall if done intelligently.
Firstly, it’s hundreds of billions over quite a few years, not immediately, out of a total European GDP of around €18 trillion.
Secondly, the majority of it will involve efficient common defence procurement and limiting it to European weapons systems only. This will plough the money back into Europe’s industry and jobs instead of sending €100bn a year to the US to purchase their weapons. It also opens up major export opportunities for those new industries.
As a counter-example, Europe spent around €2-3 trillion dealing with Covid.

Europe without Russia has around 600 million people, it Europe truly works together it makes no sense as to why we can’t do it.
We have 7 nations with a 1 or over 1 trillion economy to their name.
And 2 more economies that are approaching that over the trillion number, Poland and Switzerland

The replacement of US capabilities needs to come first.
A meaningful nuclear deterrent, airborne Reconnaissance, air defence, communication.
The deterrent alone will be so expensive that it overstretches the resources of most member States, a joined solution is needed.

To be clear, I want the EU to be a massive power base and it’s own military industrial complex. But that comes with a cost, and I’m not just talking the trillions required to not only build it, but fund it for years. I’m talking about the opportunity cost. We need to do this, but we cannot do this and keep our society the way it is. Sacrifices will have to be made. Higher taxes. Less spending. Less aid overseas. Smaller government.
I have zero faith that the people of Europe will accept this. When the Ukraine war is over, Europe will get lax, and you’ll see people will demand less spending on military output.
The European people, in general, will not rise to the challenge

This will not end well, especially given the rise of fascism. It will take 10 to 15 years to see results from these investments, and whatever comes of them, combined with the rise of fascism, will likely not be good
