re UN deployment , if things have to chaneg , already make 2/3 needed or a free vote

To think we need the approval of authoritarian leaders in China and Russia to send peacekeepers…. It’s about time we changed things.

The good old fear mongering, SF have been banging this drum since 2001.

Don’t see this as an abandonment of neutrality, see it as ireland having more control over where it can deploy it’s forces.
Comfortable-Bonus421 on
Ireland is not neutral. It’s simply militarily non-aligned for historical reasons.
We are not like Switzerland or Austria who are constitutionally neutral, but have strong militaries and can defend themselves if attacked.

Sinn Fein would say anything remotely plausible if it meant demeaning the current government. If they were in power and did the same thing they would claim its a pro-neutrality move.
This is a nothing story other than political maneuverings

Call it what you like, but neutrality is totally non-viable when the there are genuine threats out there.
In our current state of defence, we could be the next Ukraine. Lots of financial help from allies, lots of thoughts and prayers.

Sinn Feins stance on Russia and European nations defending themselves against agression is shameful and hypocritical and needs to be called out for the tankie bolocks that it is.
I can agree with SF on a lot. But their foreign affairs is embarrassing

I disagree with abandoning our neutrality you should fix your own country before trying to arbitrarily enforce whoever’s in power agenda.
Also we have no foreign interests and will gain nothing from it.
This is a stupid idea.

We’ve spent the last two years calling Putin a war criminal. Hardly the actions of a country who are actually neutral. We’re not neutral and never have been. We’re just cheap.

Every other neutral country spends more per head of population on their military defence than Ireland do. SF can fuck off with their bs.

The irony of Sinn Fein wishing to continue to have the RAF provide policing of Irish airspace … Remember when our “our gallant allies in Europe'” were…checks notes … Kaiserreich Imperial Germany and the Turkish Ottoman Empire …
“There are no permanent enemies, and no permanent *friends, only* permanent interests”
This is the opposition doing what it’s supposed to do. They are supposed to challenge the government, they still represent 40-50% of the population. I don’t agree with them, but they’re not wrong to do it.

It seems pretty necessary seeing as the UN has become a hindrance more than an asset.
With 2 powerful bad faith actors inside in the USA and Russia colluding together it’s now worse than the League of Nations.
If we can’t decide on our own neutrality on our own what sort of a country do we have?

1- Removing the triple lock is not about neutrality, it is about changing how Ireland can come to a decision to send peacekeepers on missions abroad.
B- Ireland is not really neutral. It is not in the constitution or in mentioned explicitly in any legislation. We have often helped countries who we thought were on our side i.e. Allies vs the Nazis, the West vs the Soviet Union & the USA after 9/11 (probably not a great idea to keep it going for Iraq)
iii- The world appears to changing rapidly. It might be going back to a more aggressive and conflict ridden age were bigger countries try to take slices out of smaller ones. Thanks to geography, we are relatively safe from this and we’re probably as likely to gain territory from our big neighbour as lose it. But we still should consider that we are a part of the world and think about how we can contribute towards causes that suit both our principles and our interests.

Ukraine.

Irish neutrality was always pointless. Germany would not have stopped at Liverpool. Neither will the Russians.

We’ve chosen sides in Gaza and Ukraine,(the right side). We let the US military refuel in Shannon and we rely on the UK to protect our island.
It’s farcical to suggest that Ireland is neutral.

The Triple Lock needs to be scrapped altogether.
