That’s completely understandable comment from a self-determined People.

I’m an American and I don’t want to be American either!

    3. IronBlossom3 on

What do they want to be? It would be nice to see how they align themselves because they are currently running on Danish subsidies and making only statements of independence.

    4. MightyHydrar on

Could someone explain to this guy that an independent Greenland would be swallowed up by the US in an afternoon and htat staying part of Denmark is the only protection they have?

    5. evieluvsrainbows on

This is very much just going to go through one of Trump’s ears and immediately go right through the other. He doesn’t care about what a country wants, he’s in it for himself and his protectionist, expansionist, and dictatorial agenda and regime. He’s not going to respect that Greenland doesn’t want to be part of the U.S.; same with how he’s still referring to Justin Trudeau as “Governor” despite him already clearly stating very sternly that we Canadians will never, ever, *ever* agree to being annexed or taken over by the United States.

Trump is even more insane and unhinged than he was in his first term and that says a lot considering how much chaos and nonsense occurred during his first term too.

      Where’s my favourite comment? 😀

If you reject the Danes then you’re welcoming an imperialist America

      What trump hears

“We don’t want to be Danes”

    9. Normal-Stick6437 on

Well then, Denmark should let them become independent. Tho, they better dont cry when they lose all the perks they have being part of Denmark or when US come and says: “You are now US territory”

    10. Zhukov-74 on

I wonder if an independent Greenland would join the European Union.

    11. Shawn_The_Sheep777 on

Now is not the time for smaller nations not to be allied with others

    12. FreakyFranklinBill on

i expect someone to say they don’t have the right cards soon.

    13. Deepfire_DM on

Not a good time to fight for independence when you are weak and small.

    14. iamabigtree on

Greenland going indopednent means the US is more likely to annex them.

    15. grafknives on

      We in Europe hear you…

But this is NOT how it works.

You are 60K large nation, and global superpower wants to own you. Andy this statement makes it harder to defend Greenland as part of Danmark and Europe.

    16. jus_talionis on

Anything USA wants to do in our country militarily, they can already do. Build more bases? Go ahead. Send more troops. Go ahead. That’s the agreement we have because USA and Denmark are allies.

Trump still wants our country because he wants to steal our underground resources so his buddy Musk can use them in his gadgets, or because he is a narcissist who wants to be remembered as having expanded the USA.

      LEAVE US OUT OF IT.

    17. ahalikias on

Greenland’s position is untenable, given such a small population and great value/land mass. His statement is likely to cause more harm than good. I feel for them, but they need military protection, either by succumbing to the US or going to Denmark and hope NATO Article 5 can be used against the US.

    18. JumpToTheSky on

I suspect trump may not even be interested in Greenland, he is just interested in fueling division. “We don’t want to be Americans or Danes” may be irrelevant and obvious for the American part, but may fuel some indempence thoughts regarding the Danish part.

    19. ‘It won’t hurt, just lie down, you’ll enjoy it’ rapist Trump

    20. They are too small to be independent. 50% of their economy is subsidies from Denmark.

    21. DingoCertain on

How convenient nonetheless that he is talking so much abut independence now that Trump is offering huge bribes to the Greanlanders in exchange for annexation…

    22. Jigsawsupport on

I am going to be a bit mean here.

This is the problem with a lot of separatist groups, they want to be independent, and at the same time they don’t want the trouble that separatism will cause and refuse to acknowledge it.

Security concerns and defence, are one of the reasons people organized into countries in the first place.

“We are not for sale and can’t just be taken. Our future is decided by us in Greenland.”

It all well and good saying that, but Trump quite literally good do that with a few phone calls, he could task the 10th Mountain to take it next week and there is nothing they could do about it.

So they have to decide, do they want to be European or do they want to be under Trumps orange thumb?

    23. AMeasuredBerserker on

I genuinely do not get what Greenland thinks that is going to achieve as an independent country.

It has a population of a couple thousand at the edge of the world in the frigid cold wastes of the Northern hemisphere.

I get the desire for independence as a romantic notion but how will it actually benefit Greenlanders? All that will happen, much like the US is proving, is another country will prey on them and leverage considerable investment for less true independence.

    24. ItsACaragor on

The issue is that they will need to choose one for whether they want it or not.

They are 50000 or so, if they become independent they will be gobbled by either the US or Russia in a minute.

    25. Shevek99 on

This is what is called an useful idiot.

If Greenland declares independence at 2PM, by 2:15 PM they would be already invaded by the US alleging that it was necessary to avoid the invasion by Russia (or even worse, by Canada)

    26. will_dormer on

I don’t think Danes have spent enough time understanding why Greenlanders are unsatisfied… There are wounds from the past that could be talked about more, and maybe it is too late, but if not then a new relationship be made.

I would be horrified if Greenland got in the grips of orange.. I think Greenland has many hurt feelings and unmeet needs, and racism needs to be faught back as many Greenlanders experience it.

Greenland has a culture, nation and nature to be proud of. The new airports in Greenland are open for the world to come visit too, which I would hope could make it possible for new opportunities. There is election right now in Greenland and it might be a really important vote for them next week and for their future, giving the geopolitics situation I would recommend them to stay in the commonwealth or at least wait 4 more years and then vote, but it is up to them they have rights to leave when they want, it is their brexit moment.

    27. Plappedudel on

The second Greenland becomes fully independent is when Trump sends the Navy to occupy it. The only reason he’s not doing that now is that it belongs to a NATO ally. But an Independent Greenland wouldn’t be in NATO, so there’d be no one left to intervene.

    28. Like Trump gives a shit what Greenland wants. He doesn’t even care what Americans want.

    29. Fuckinglovedmb on

What does Greenland have that he wants? Are you guys rich in minerals? I

    30. CarolinaPanthers2015 on

Yep. They had just made it clear ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! And therefore, Donald Trump needs to drop those unrealistic plans of having Greenland become a part of the United States right here AND right now.

    31. Penang_lang on

So what will happen if the US really land troops and take Greenland by force?

    32. adevland on

Sadly, if they don’t pick a side then Trump & Putin will pick for them and nobody will come to their aid.

Now is not the time to stand alone. Now is the time to stand united.

    33. Whightwolf on

Don’t the Danes pay half of his government’s income? What does independence even look like?

    34. Glittering-Fudge-154 on

Independece? They would be swalliwed by ruSSia or trump. They should be happy to be part of one of the brightest & most educated and tolerant people on this planet tbh. Pride comes before the fall as they say

    35. They go independent. America can invade, as they won’t be in NATO anymore.

    36. IdiAmini on

Don’t know if anybody from Greenland will read this, but it would be better if you can get your PM to stop saying they don’t want to be Danes and making a false equivalence between the US and Denmark.

Reason: if you make any kind of equivalence between Denmark and the US, Trump will see it as aquiescing and will use these types of remarks to put Denmark and the US on the same footing

Your PM should know this and therefore I think he is playing a very dangerous game right now

    37. Correct-Site4504 on

With all the respect to the native Greenland population, how do you imagine running a huge independent country with only the maximum of 60k people and Denmark subsidising your budged for a half billion of euros?

    38. MeBollasDellero on

Awesome! Puerto Rico Did want to be European or American…but here we are….under colonial rule by a former European colony.

    39. VisibleFiction on

He seems like total idiot. You can talk about independence when you have large enough economy, population and army to be able to defend Greenland and sustain your country. You want to be independent? Start 10 child policy or something and maybe in few generations it’s doable. Currently this sort of talk will just encourage Trump.

    40. Very suspicious thing to say. He sounds like a conservative.

      Greenland, smarten up.

    41. Aethericseraphim on

He is an idiot, a moron and a complete fool all rolled into one.

The choice is one or the other as he doesn’t have the means or the finances to back up independence. A smart person would say “WHILE we don’t want to be Americans or Danes, in the current climate, being a dane is preferable to being an American.”

By not being realistic, he just courts more American imperial ambitions, because now Krasnov and his cult know that they see no difference between Danish rule and American rule.

    42. Jabclap27 on

Does he know that half of the budget of Greenland are Danish Subsidies? Independence is never gonna work if you want to keep your current public services.

Let alone the fact that the USA would either militarily or economically dominate them immediately.
