**The first weeks of the Trump presidency have finally awakened the Europeans, now faced with a reversal of alliances. This shift and the need to support Ukraine are forcing them to invent new frameworks for cooperation, writes Le Monde columnist Sylvie Kauffmann.**
The best thing that ever happened to NATO was Vladimir Putin, Europeans in Brussels have said since February 24, 2022. Shocked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this transatlantic defense alliance, which French President Emmanuel Macron said was “brain-dead” in 2019, has strengthened and expanded. Is Donald Trump today the best thing that could happen to Europe, which Macron said was “in mortal danger” a year ago?
Paradoxically, the answer could be yes. It took the intoxication of power of an old real-estate dealmaker turned president of the United States, combined with the brutality of a 40-year-old Yale law graduate, JD Vance, a veteran of the Iraq war who now holds the positions of vice president, [illiberal ideologue and attack dog](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2025/03/05/jd-vance-the-ideologue-radicalizing-trump-s-foreign-policy_6738825_4.html), to finally awaken a slumbering Europe. For 20 years, the Europeans have refused to draw the consequences of an evolution that has been constant on the other side of the Atlantic, that of an American retreat coupled with an obsession with Chinese power. Five weeks of the new Trump tornado have shaken them out of their lethargy. For good.
The invasion of Ukraine had opened their eyes to Russia’s true intentions – at least for those who had ignored them. Washington’s sudden swing in favor of Moscow, spurred on by Trump under the pretext of ending the war in Ukraine, has forced them to look at the US not as an ally but as an adversary.
The West is a bygone concept. The US president claims that the European Union was “created to screw” his country. To the West as to the East, Europe is surrounded by hostile powers that rely on force – of which it hardly has any – and despise law – which it worships. In the Global South, it is trying to re-establish ties with powers, most of which have a grievance against its colonial past.
When Trump said EU was built to screw US, what he meant was, EU was established to screw the “traditional institutions” of “the West” before the enlightenment thinking.
That’s why America’s Project 2025 and Russia’s “Special Military Operation” are a perfect marriage.

“Every action has an equal and opposite reaction” the positive reaction in this case is Europe standing on its own two feet again, and uniting creating a new candidate for leader of the free world. Obviously Europe has a long way to go in decoupling from the US, but I am hopeful we will have a bright future if we work for it.

If I had a nickle for every time a “strong leader” does something only to achieve a incredible strong counter reaction I’d have two nickles.
Which isn’t a lot but it’s werd it happened twice.

The law of unintended consequences. It may seem like the bad guys are winning right now, but it actually might be what was needed to shake us out of our patterns and build a better world.

Well, he’s using the same playbook as Putin, so that makes sense. The “Special Military Operation” to avoid Ukraine from joining NATO made NATO initially stronger as well. Now that the US is considering leaving NATO it will become weaker again. Win-win for Russia I guess.

Same mistake as Poutine’s.
Can’t expect better coming from a somber idiot, if Poutine already made it before him.

Maybe he will get his Nobel peace price after all – for reinvigorating cooperation in Europe

Funnily enough, Trump has made the rest of the world closer than ever before, outside Russia and his cult of course.

Sadly I think Americans will not try to hold him back. They are either apathetic or they don’t understand what’s going on.

I always thought we need to discover hostile aliens to finally move on from primitive tribalism and unite… turns out it’s an imbecile in the white house pushing that along 👍

Its amazing, really. Everytime throughout human history, when dictators have begun to dictate, the free peoples or free world has united somehow and grew stronger and eventually overthrown or isolated the dictator. This time will be no different.
