Can’t read the article , but, cost is definitely going to be an issue.

    2. No-Outside6067 on

      Cost and loud patrons.
I’ll only go to IFI where the patron’s are there to watch. Or kids movies with my family because kids still enjoy going cinema.

Love the cinema, hate how the public act in certain cinemas. The rougher the area the more dodgy the cinema experience. Had to give up going to the Liffey Valley cinema for that reason, despite that being – on paper – the best general cinema in the country.

    4. Human_Cell_1464 on

About 70 euro to go and have people ruin it. Rent it at home with a curry for half the price

    5. Kyadagum_Dulgadee on

When I can, I go to see films first thing on a Saturday morning. Tends to just be people who are just there to watch the film. No dickheads with their phones out or teenagers running in and out every few minutes. Going to the cinema in the evening is often a frustrating experience.

    6. LoonyFruit on

There’s a reason why bargain Wednesdays (odeon) are busy and other nights are crickets

    7. Ven0mspawn on

Other people. I have it another chance 2 years ago after skipping for a very long time. People were on their phones, talking, screaming etc throughout the entire movie. Never again.

      • Modern home entrainment systems, high definition tvs, surround sound speakers, etc means you can get a pretty good movie experience at home

      • It can be costly to go to the cinema, especially with a family

      • It’s difficult to enjoy the cinema when you’re often joined by loud, rude, obnoxious strangers

    9. RejectingBoredom on

For me it’s literally just location. I have to do a 40 minute drive if I want to go to the cinema so the whole experience is more cost than it’s worth

If I had one across the street I’d probably be in every other week.

    10. ThePodgemonster on

The cost to sit there, the cost to eat stale popcorn. The 20 minutes of mindnumbing tv ads prior to the start. The wankers who are late in, the wankers who talk too loud, the wankers who eat too loud, the wankers on their phones. The lack of control the staff have to get these wankers to cop on.

Dodgy box will have the film up in a week after release coz I’m a miserable wanker

    11. TigNaGig on

Ticket price and then a tenner for popcorn and a drink.

Cheaper to pay for a month of streaming service than a single cinema trip.

    12. Exclamation_Marc on

Too many arseholes who act like they’re in their own living rooms.

    13. Snapper_72 on

Very expensive and no security to manage behavior while the movie is playing. Meaning if there is shitheads in the theater you won’t enjoy the film and are out of pocket a substantial amount of money.

    14. Extension-Lock-7046 on

The last time I went to the cinema it was freezing and had to leave my jacket on, no doubt a cost saving measure but wouldn’t entice you back. It’s people’s general rude and entitled behaviour, same with concert going.

    15. DylanToebac on

Cheap tickets like what odeon do actually attract a rougher crowd. The omniplex, though way more expensive tends to have a nicer, more appreciative crowd . I’d pay 20 euro no problem if it attracted like minded people

    16. Beach_Glas1 on

Cinema popcorn used to be way nicer than the stuff you’d make at home in the microwave.

Now they just order it in huge bags that sit there for an unknown amount of time. I had cinema popcorn that tasted mouldy before and it’s often literally like eating cardboard.

    17. powerhungrymouse on

The presence of other people is what puts me off. People have lost all sense of consideration for other people and I don’t expect the staff working there for mininum wage to have to deal with abuse from little scrotes and I’m not a confrontational person myself. It’s too expensive to have no choice but to leave halfway through.

    18. Tony_Meatballs_00 on

You never get any bother in the cinemas here in Derry in my experience

I’m amazed it’s so bad people don’t go down south

    19. DontOpenThatTrapDoor on

Last time I went they didn’t turn the lights off when the film started meh it did make the people on their phones less annoying tho

    20. Brilliant-Ad-3547 on

      Generally just the cost.

€60 excursion for 2x adults and 1x child by the time we are finished.

We spend €100 week on food shopping.

It just is a once a month or one bi monthly treat really.

Also, to be fair, IMC do monthly cost plan which is great but each person needs an account – not sure you can have an account for kids (need to look into it). So that would help but the cost of popcorn and that.

If they charged less overall they might get more repeat business and turnover.

    21. Additional-Wind8186 on

How is it possible not wanting to pay 15€ of ticket plus 10€ of popcorn for a movie that you can pirate in 5 minutes on the toilet or watch in a week on netflix?

    22. CarpenterAndSuch on

Other people’s phones are incompatible with the cinema going experience.

I genuinely think cinemas should have a phone cloakroom/locker service.

They could incentivise patrons to participate by offering them a free popcorn or a euro off their ticket.

    23. Evergreen1Wild on

I look at the medium screen all day then the smaller screen for some texts then the larger screen for some TV. Driving and paying to stare at an even bigger screen after all of that is not appealing to me. I think COVID also got us all on screens far more of the time & I’m both addicted to and sick of them.

    24. segasega89 on

Because of scummy teenagers ruining everything because they’re narcissistic cunts.

    25. graemo72 on

It’s expensive, it’s has a defined starting time. You can’t pause it for a pee. The film may not be worth the time or financial investment. But most of all, they let the public in. Why would you want to watch a film with strangers in the room. Waaay to alert to others proximity to enjoy anything that requires my concentration.

    26. justformedellin on

I go to the cinema every week. I’m a member of MubiGo, I get 4 movies in the cinema a month for less than €20.

This sub is so anti-society it’s unbelievable. I go to turn IFI most weeks. I’ve never seen any of the kind of behaviour that’s being reported here. One of the top posts is about bad behaviour in the IFI but I just haven’t seen it and cinemas were worse behaved when I was a kid.

Modern people hate the company of others. They have great smart tvs at home. Then then invent excuses.

      Also, fewer good movies

    27. DorkusMalorkus89 on

Because it’s too much of a gamble on whether you’re going to have inconsiderate cunts talking or being disruptive throughout the whole film. Better off waiting for streaming.

    28. I’m starting to think I’m really lucky, I go to the cinema regularly enough and I’ve rarely seen anyone messing on their phone etc. Getting the subscription that some cinemas do saves a lot of money if you go regularly. 17.99 a month for as many films as you want is pretty good, although the popcorn and snacks are quite expensive these days. I have a decent 4k TV etc but it’s just not the same.

    29. dnc_1981 on

Because of wankers watching their phones, ruining it for everyone else

    30. WayMaleficent1465 on

Last time I went to the cinema the person behind was working their way through a multipack of tayto and doing some sort to origami with the empty packet

    31. WayMaleficent1465 on

I know cinemas have amazing sound systems and that’s part of the experience but it would be great if there was an option to use headphones. If people want to talk or make noise at least it wouldn’t distract from the film and we still get the value of the big screen

    32. PPPickUpAPenguin on

For me, Cinema Ettiquite – it’s a disgrace.
Don’t mind paying to see a great movie and not one for spending a fortune on snacks and things, but there’s a lot of people sit, talking through the movie, using phones etc, and i just can’t enjoy a movie with distraction.

    33. poveltop on

Film industries gone to the dogs ladbible/Joe.ie will do posts like “2025 will be an amazing years for films” and it’s all sequels and remakes

    34. The3rdbaboon on

I got a projector and speakers and it’s just as good. Plus I don’t have other people annoying me.

    35. Dave1711 on

Post covid the quality of movies has been pretty poor imo before there was something every 2-3 weeks worth seeing now it feels like there’s months with nothing worthwhile.

    36. ToTooThenThan on

Shit movies tbh, I’ll go see 28 years later when it’s out but nothing else looks worthwhile

    37. Pension_Alternative on

My reasons for not going anymore:

      (1) There’s very rarely anything on that interests me.

      (2) Other people behaving badly.

I used to be a very regular cinema goer. Not anymore. I miss it to be honest but there’s an awful lot of shyte being shown
