Paul Murphy can get the boat tbh, the triple lock is a backward looking notion of ‘neutrality’. We’re not neutral no more Paul, in case you hadn’t noticed! Thankfully no one is listening to Murphy on this policy and the triple lock will be removed by government shortly. It’ll then pave the way for our greater participation in EU affairs

Says it right there at the beginning, hard to miss really.
I often wonder do people who vote for the likes of Paul Murphy seriously want him to have his hands of the levers of power, making difficult calculations and difficult decisions in a complex world?
Do they send him to Kildare Street to go off on mad ones or do they expect him to be a minister some day? Like is it just because they’re pissed off at something or other and want someone to shout incoherencies across the Dáil floor?

It was worth defending when the rules based world order was still in place. Now it’s ridiculous to give Russia and the USA and in the future, China, a veto over Irish deployment. There’s no argument left for it.
That’s not to say we need to deploy anywhere in a hurry. But giving those lunatics in the security council a veto just can’t be argued for.
in 2013 there was no war in europe and russia wasnt a (known) rogue state, and was in the G8. Now in 2025 the UN security council has a rogue state, a russian sympathiser installed in the whitehouse and the chinese threatening to invade taiwan after decades of agreeing not to use force.
The UN security council is defunct. The triple lock effectivly gives each of russia, america and china a veto on the deployment if irish peacekeepers.

We should be in charge of what we do with our armed forces and should be able to choose who we wish to help. The triple lock needs to go.

Old article, but if anyone thinks we should keep protecting it now then they need to get their head out of their arse, russia would attack us the second they thought they would get away with it and the usa by ‘electing’ an unhinged narcissistic rapist so easily and giving it total control without any restraint have shown they are not to be trusted.
Irish neutrality is a relic in the 21st century. I used to strongly champion it, but a lot has changed since the days of De Valera and The Emergency.
