Trust in the US at rock bottom and clear majority for more defense spending
      François Aulner | Update: 11.03.2025 17:00

A large majority of people would be in favor of Luxembourg investing more in its defense. An even larger majority would be of the opinion that the United States is not a reliable partner. This is evident, among other things, from the results of a spontaneous survey commissioned by RTL from Ilres. A representative sample of 500 eligible residents was surveyed online via Mypanel between March 7 and 10.

A full 80% of respondents do not consider the United States to be no longer a reliable partner. Just 8% still have trust, while 12% do not know.

The results of our new survey show that a clear majority of respondents, at 73% believe that Luxembourg should invest more in its defense. 19% are against it. 8% have no opinion.

Context: 2% or 3% of GNI and where should the money come from?

The government is currently conducting discussions internally, but also with all parties in the Chamber, about defense spending. It currently stands at 1.32% of national wealth. Like the previous government, due to pressure from NATO , the current government has set itself a new target of 2% of national wealth (GNB) by 2030, which corresponds to an increase of around 600 million euros. A few hours before US Vice President JD Vance’s speech in Munich on February 14 , Prime Minister Luc Frieden declared that it would be better to “mentally prepare” for 3% . The government wants to make a decision by the NATO summit from June 24 to 26.

All EU heads of state and government agreed to the EU Commission’s proposal to allow more debt at a special summit last week , if it is for defense. Luxembourg’s Finance Minister Gilles Roth, however, spoke out against the Grand Duchy taking on more debt in an RTL interview last week . He favors a “new orientation” of investments.

Discussions about how high defense spending should be and how an increase should be financed have begun. The Ilres poll for RTL shows at least that the vast majority of respondents want more defense.
