Most European solutions have less features, even the paid providers offer less then the free American ones

The main problem is the infrastructure. 90% of all EU tech companies are using either AWS, Azure or Google cloud.

It’s probably been suggested before but Le Chat from Mistral is a good ChatGPT / Claude alternative.

How about SoundCloud for music streaming? Company based in Berlin!

Mailbox.org is not free. Minimum plan is 2eur per month.
But it is a very good email service provider.

For browsers – Europe has Opera. It’s Norwegian if I’m not wrong and has a lot of features like built-in VPN, AI, integration with social media

I would suggest Startpage.com as an alternative for Google.

While I have changed a few of these (duckduckgo, Firefox and Le Chat are great)I just realized that giving these up is a lot harder than buying a different detergent at the supermarket. I’ve an android phone, do I give up gmail? Youtube? Reddit? It shows you how powerful a well designed monopoly is.

Mozilla (so Firefox and Thunderbird) is an US company. DuckDuckGo is an US company. BlueSky is an US company.

Stop buying iPhones. Use Ecosia and a domestic mail service. Switch to Linux. These 3 steps alone would make a much more impactful change ‘cause they hurt the big 3 Americans techbros: Apple, Google and Microsoft.

Wanna hurt Meta also? Stop looking at Facebook and Instagram and switch to an non-US alternative for messaging, like SMS since they now support RCS.

I left Spotify because they donated money to Trump. And I went to deezer because it was owned by I believe French company. However its majority share is held by a Russia oligarchy who has donated money to some Dems but million to republicans. The majority is owned by a USA company but the owner of that USA company is Russian.

..did they really recommend to replace Reddit with Lemmy and then tell you to join their community.. on Reddit?

What’s a good alternative to Google maps? I use that a lot!

Yes I’m definitely telling everyone to stop using what they are most comfortable to use and tell them to use an obscure and completely unused European alternative. That will show the Americans

My biggest struggle is streaming services. Netflix, Prime, HBO all American owned. I’ve unsubbed from Netflix and HBO and will unsub from Prime after WoT S3 is finished… Apart from piracy, I don’t think we have a European alternative?

    16. dryptamine on

the issue is that the eu alternatives arent nearly as good in most cases

The mail offerings seem to be very small here. It should be listed somewhere, that pretty much every major telco/internet provider has a mailservice included with most of their packages. As with almost every other service: **diversity is extra security**. Pointing and flocking to the same mail system is absolutely not smart.

      I miss Vivaldi..

Edit to say: Thank you for doing this! I don’t mean to be complaining really.

Yet ya’ll happily continue using reddit. Can’t do without your echoist of echo chambers after all, no? But hey, nice performance as always. You must feel really good about yourselfs.
