“The empire does not want to help Ukraine, it wants to colonise it. The tool of colonialism is war” – Viktor Orban’s sentence would be agreed by everyone in Ukraine. The fact that the Prime Minister has finally said it would certainly make many people wonder, from the Ukrainian soldiers on the front line to the people who have been vegetating for years in the remains of homes destroyed by rocket attacks, to the leadership of Ukraine.
After all, there really is an empire that believes that Ukraine is not a country. One that thinks that the Ukrainian people, culture and language are a Bolshevik creation, and one that, not incidentally, has waged war against it. It has carved out territories from the country and is seeking to take more when it has failed to take it all.
But this is not the empire Viktor Orbán had in mind when he was worried about Ukraine. In his speech on 15 March, he used the word ‘empire’ fifteen times, but not once in reference to Russia. He did not even mention Russia during his polo-talking, empire-talking, Ukraine-talking, war-mongering rhetoric.
For Orbán, empire is the European Union. Crescent moon, eagle, star, red or Union yellow, empire only wants conquest and perpetual provinces.” Of course, he has drawn parallels between Brussels and Soviet Moscow before, but so far it has been literally Brusselsism. This meant “the bureaucrats”, the “Brussels leadership”, not the EU itself. Now the ‘EU yellow star’ has become the empire, in line with the Ottoman conquerors, the Nazis and the Soviet Union.
This kind of EU patenting is a new level. One can argue that this is a rhetorical turn, but only if one has never seen a history book.
Viktor Orbán has equated the European Union with the conquest that tore Hungary apart, the destruction, the Holocaust, concentration camps, the dumping of people in the Danube, the Gulag, the Malenky robot and the crushing of the ’56 revolution. By the way, by referring to Hungary, which was constantly fighting against empires and, according to Orbán, successfully fighting against them, the Prime Minister also verbally erected a monument to the occupation of Szabadság Square: just as it was intended to symbolise that Hungary was only a victim of the Nazi machine, not a cooperating member, so he now pretends that Hungary is an opponent and enemy of the EU, which Hungary voluntarily joined by referendum, with the consent of the liberal Fidesz led by Viktor Orbán.

Good thing there is an easy way out of “the empire” for Orbán, somehow he doesn’t want to go though 😀

Jesus christ. Then fucking leave the union. GB did it, you can do it to. Let’s see where you end up. Oban is loud mouthing a lot considering that the only reason his country is afloat is the eu.
At least GB had an industrial Base to fall back on

At this point, are we sure Orban isn’t dement or senile?

So why doesn’t he call for a referendum and ask Hungarians if they want to leave the EU?

He’s not wrong, he’s just pointing the finger in the wrong direction. The empire he’s describing here is further east.

The EU, which is composed of 27 different countries is an empire, but the USA with Trump saying he wants to annex Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal is not an empire at all.

It baffles my mind that the EU isn’t effectively bullying Hungary out of the Union. At this point it does just not make sense anymore that they are valued as a member.
And yes, everybody hopes for Peter Magyar. But even with taking the political advantage for FIDESZ in mind, they were elected with an actual majority in 2022.

Empires are anti-democratic by their very nature. The fact that Hungary/Orbán still has a vote in the EU and that that vote isn´t simply disregarded must mean that the EU is not an Empire but a democracy.
Sure, that democracy needs a lot of work and improvements but the foundation is sound.

The EU Commission should suspend the vote of any country deemed anti-democratic, meaning those who support more or less implicitly anti-democratic countries.
