This opens the door for the € 500B defence and infrastructure budget that might reshape the balance of power on the continent.

500 Billion Euros just for Defense. I hope it is enough to get our army back on track and defend Europe if necessary.

Edit: I still got old informations. You guys are right an defense spending is now unlimited.

      good.

next step, when the new government is sworn, get rid of it.

(yes, I know it wont happen with CDU)

    4. Atleast make sure the AFD doesn’t win the next elections then. Would be kinda scary.

So basically an unlimited amount of debt. No one in their right mind would ever agree with something like this.

Isn’t it funny how Merz suddenly is ok with it, now that he is chancellor, and was totally against it while other parties were in charge …

Merz starts his rule by demonstrating that he’s a shameless liar. When he was in opposition he categorically rejected loosening the Schuldenbremse. Now that he is in power it’s the very first thing he does.

It’s obvious that loosening it was desperately necessary, and he was blocking it only to sabotage the previous government. To top this pipe of shit, he even did it with the old Bundestag, because thanks to his sabotage the sensible parties don’t have enough votes to do it in the new one.

at this point tgey can abolish it, no? It has never been adhered to?

    9. Mixed feelings about this. I understand the need to increase defence spending (and agree with it) so it’s not about the money, but I can’t help but worry about who could be in control of all these new resources in the future.

I sincerely hope all the chaos in the US will take the wind out of the AfD’s sails, but it feels like anything can happen these days. For the record, I have these concerns about almost every country in the EU, not just Germany specifically.

Yes. Germany should absolutely take on “unlimited” debt. This is genius level policy, and only good things can come from it.

“the Greens managed to obtain the promise of €100 billion in climate investment and to get the goal of climate neutrality enshrined in the German constitution.”

After directly after changing a policy that wrecked Germany for years, they are now enshrining another dictate to the future generations ??

To be fair, rhis is super weird. A new Bundestag was electee, but the lame duck one just makes constitutional changes?
This is a bad precedent and in democratic countries shouldn’t fly. I know it’s down the list of concerns, but parliaments really shouldn’t have anything to do with Constitutions, there should be separate conventions and possibly mandatory referendums for that.

The headline is wrong. The Bundestag agreed on two things: A new, separate, fixed, debt-based federal budget for infrastructure projects. And an exemption from the debt brake for defense related costs.

Neither of those is a “reform” of the debt brake, which is still exactly the same as before. The soon-to-be leading government party CDU announced to reform the debt brake later this year.

Don’t forget the €100 billion to the Climate and Transition Fund.

Germany is finally back on the path to economic recovery, ironically after Merz blocked all progress for 3 and a half years

Only problem is that a lot of this money is gonna come from us, china and the saudis

No perfect solution just an unfortunate set of circumstances. Everyone is isolating now at the surface but deep down the big money doesn’t give a fuck what it’s going towards as long as the returns are solid and plentiful

The chains of ww2 are coming off. I think Trump might’ve did Europe a favour.

And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about part 3 of this saga a little bit even if there’s no reason to with current Germany.
