**Aix-Marseille University wants to fund the work of some 15 academics in fields targeted by the new US administration.**
A week after launching its Safe Place for Science call for applications, Aix-Marseille University (AMU) has already received a large number of them. “About 50 have come in through all kinds of channels: emails, social media, but also via our laboratory directors who are in contact with researchers in the United States,” said Eric Berton, president of AMU, proud of the initiative’s success.
The program at the university in Provence, conceived in the wake of the Stand Up for Science movement, is designed to welcome scientists prevented from continuing their research in the US by measures taken by Donald Trump. “It is a question of giving scientific asylum to all those colleagues who are being held back, dismissed or whose funding has been cut. Out of solidarity, but also because what is happening over there is impacting our research,” said Berton.
On Tuesday, March 11, AMU, which has 120 research units and 80,000 students, welcomed the first of these potential recruits. Andrea, a 39-year-old doctor of epidemiology and assistant professor at a large state university in the American Northeast, does not wish to be identified. “Because I have not yet had an official offer here, but also because I would like to personally announce my departure to the students and the postdoctoral fellow for whom I am responsible,” she explained.
On a research mission in Africa, this infectious disease specialist came to Marseille without first returning to the US. “It’s all very sudden. The announcement was made on Wednesday, and I sent an email the next day. On Friday, I was asked to come… And here I am,” she said.

Every European country needs to get on board with these sorts of initiatives so that they do not miss out on the benefits of America’s brain drain.
That’s some weak propaganda.
We’re talking about a public university of 80k students with a budget of mere 750 milion euros, i doubt they have the resources to attract the best researchers.
Unfortunately european academia simply just can’t compete with US institutions, they’re light years ahead of everyone else.
And my retard government is just trying to stop universities from doing courses in Enlish and wants them to revert to Dutch. This is so sad :'(
You know that the people that going to Europe are the people that wanted Harris to win in the November 2024 election right?
American sabotage as usual. Business as usual.
France about to have thousands of new gender studies/LGBQT professors.
The stupidity of some comments is baffling.
As an American researcher this is awesome, I’ve always said if I had a good way out of here I would take it. Maybe the future will have something in store for me.
Looks like the next Democratic candidate has all of Europe’s back
Remember when the Nazi’s targeted “Jewish intellectualism”? This is basically the same thing.
This is great, and will benefit Europe. I have a friend who studies mental health in transgender deer, and recently had all of her funding pulled. She’s in the process of moving to Belgium to continue her studies.
Freedom is in Europe not in the backwards fascist US. They hate knowledge there. When you get a vaccine conspiracist to run the department of health and get rid of the department of education, you are seriously living in an idiocracy.
Although I enjoy this backlash as a European, the last thing the U.S. needs is to lose its researchers and thinkers. They should rally together to strengthen the social contract rather than abandon it.
American Engineers need a place too. This engineer is wondering if there is room for
Good. Get them off the government payroll. Lazy grifters.
