For context: in the 1980s, when the Cold War still had European armies preparing for conventional warfare against a peer level enemy the armed forces of the Netherlands had approximately 120k-140k active personnel.
Just make it obligatory. With the shit show that’s coming, I doubt it would just be Russia that comes knocking the door. America will one day become Europe’s enemy, if not already. When the war with US began remains to be seen but it will nonetheless happen. There’s no chance to win against America unless we are prepared to go full mobilization and violate lots of Geneva Suggestions.
Hard to image this will be achievable without conscription. Soldiering is not the most attractive job for most people and also has a pretty high percentage of quitters.

Think they need a foreign legion for that with 16M ppl and like 80-90% of the population couldnt imagine themselves to fight for their country. Those young people who could consider working for defense all want to be cooks.

They should aim for 500k personnel
Canada has around 70k regular forces and 30k reserve in comparison, with a population more than twice as big for perspective. 70k for their population is already quite big, 200,000 is huge.

I hope that the Netherlands and Germany will continue to cooperate on this and not build up too many duplicate structures, but complement each other as best they can.

Planning is very different from doing. How is the DAF planning to entice people to join? Short of conscription (very unpopular), the DAF isn’t very attractive to most young people.
