By Jesus Mesa – Politics Reporter:

For many in Europe, Vice President JD Vance’s skepticism toward the continent has long been evident.

As the junior senator from Ohio, he criticized NATO spending habits, mocked EU technocrats and labeled U.S. support for Ukraine an “unsustainable indulgence.” As a senate candidate, he went further, famously saying he didn’t “really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another.”

When President Donald Trump selected Vance as his running mate, some allies hoped the weight of the office might moderate his views.

Really could have stopped at “What is JD Vance’s problem”.

He’s basically one of those reddit users mocked in r/ShitAmericansSay who has become vice-president of the United States.

      >“His hostility to alliances is deliberate. It’s rooted in the idea that foreign policy should serve a narrow domestic narrative,” he said. “That makes him dangerous — but also, in a way, useful. He forces Europe to face the question it has avoided for decades.”

    5. He’s a sellout with no spine…?

He will say anything and would even sell his mother for power

Just what the far-right is or does

    6. Adorable-Puff on

Americans talking about “unsustainable indulgence” is funny considering how much they consume. Not saying it in a negative tone just its a bit hypocritical.

Nonetheless, EU leaders ..hell leaders globally need to figure out a way to navigate this without being confrontational, its unfortunately the cards everyone is dealt with and crying about it on media won’t help. People might make fun of JD Vance but there is a chance he could become POTUS.

    7. anders_hansson on

Well, isn’t he just an arrogant American? He’s also more outspoken than other American politicians (even if they may privately be just as arrogant), which is probably a good thing for domestic popularity.

    8. PeterServo on

My guess is that he’s a country bumpkin who thinks US deserves everything they want just by sheer existing and other countries are just vasals who need to kiss the ring and say thank you.

    9. Musicman1972 on

It’s interesting how their message is promulgated as they know that whatever they say will be repeated.

For example here Newseek repeats that he:

      >denounced the prosecution of a British man for silently praying outside an abortion clinic.

Which appears a reasonable denouncement since it suggests that the act of prayer, even *silent*, is restricted.

Yet nobody in the UK cares whether he was paying or not. He was breaching a local order around that facility. It’s an absolute lie that Newsweek enforces here. That a man was prosecuted for praying.

It’s constant and insidious and Europe should question every voice from America either now even those that are ostensibly critical of the current regime.

He probably did some Eurotrip in his twenties, trying to score European pussy

And was rejected by all the French,German,Dutch girls all the way

    11. PlanktonOk4560 on

Ironically the American VP is a caricature of the European view of an ignorant hillbilly American.

    12. JakkoThePumpkin on

He hates Europe because they’re not on their knees worshiping at the alter of America, he’s a genuine believer in American exceptionalism; everyone should love America & want to be American etc. so when confronted by nations that openly mock America’s ridiculousness he instantly reacts with bile.

    13. they are trying to build fascism orchestrated by the kremlin, have none of you listened to putin’s speech on the multi-polar world?

Lack of emotion, low EQ, narcissistic, developmental issues. Man i hope this man is getting rebirth in to a very poor citizen. What goes around comes around

    15. Vitrarius on

He has no “problem” with Europe. Him and the rest of this administration are all just Trump’s puppets and will point at the same direction he is currently is.

    16. bukowsky01 on

Actually it’s quite easy, the US administration has decided to force its allies into vassals.

We are to pay up and shut up, failure to comply will lead to unexpected FREEDOM in the form of tariffs, threats, and possibly JDAMS.

    17. Jasonstackhouse111 on

Well, he’s of course pissed off at nations with reproductive rights for women, LGBTQ+ rights, socialized health care and people that hate Nazis. So, most of the EU right there.

    18. iGleeson on

JD Vance’s opinions change whenever it’s beneficial to him. He’s a spineless, unprincipled scumbag.

    19. KunoichiRider on

It is quite rich when the US calls Europeans freeloaders when it comes to security issues in the Red Sea/Suez Canal.
If you have not slept through your history classes, you might know that the US sided with the Soviet Union against the UK-France expeditionary mission in the 50ies, and does not know about EUNAVFOR, which was recently expanded to 2026.

    20. I guess it’s easy to consider bombing Yemen as ‘bailing out Europe’ if you ignore the fact that the existence of the Houthis is a direct consequence of US imperialism.

    21. thomasthetanker on

It’s a twisted mind that considers a military strike value not on how badly it damages your enemies, but cautions against it in case it should benefit your ‘allies’.

    22. jelhmb48 on

      1. Europe is seen as “socialist/liberal”, Vance is rightwing authoritarian conservative populist.

      2. He loathes the NATO members underspending and Europe being unable to defend itself against Russia and constantly needing the US to help them out, also with the Houthis. WW2 is 80 years ago and non-Russia Europe has 650 million people so why would they even need the US.

      The second point is valid.

    23. Jindujun on

Maybe his former couch was an European one?

It could also be because he’s an ignorant American that does not know a thing about the world outside of the continental US?

    24. Less-Researcher184 on

What I don’t get is why they love Israel so much like it doesn’t matter what Israel spends on its military as no regular isreali troops die on front lines with us troops unlike Danish troops.

    25. Eldritchs3rdstigmata on

I am really praying for Trump to be alive at the end of his term. Ending up with that moron being President of the most powerful state on Earth would be terrible for everyone.

    26. Maligetzus on

europe is the symbol of american upper middle class – the people who like, enjoy, or even get to enjoy europe are precisely the people Trumpoids hate in the usa. they play the piano, read european authors, talk about welfare state, and go to cinque terre for vacation. for vance, they are the america of the vain – the counterbalance of people like him, the american dream, a rag to riches story

    27. Ambiverthero on

Well that was a newspaper article that could and should have been a very tweet.

    28. _Woland_- on

J.D. Vance should see a shrink. He is creating imaginary enemies.

    29. Kamamura_CZ on

The USA was always the enemy of the Europe, only before Trump, they did it covertly. The whole 2014 coup in Ukraine orchestrated by Victoria Nuland and John Brannan was designed to disrupt the alliance of Russian resources and German industry (Kissinger).

The aim of the USA today is to bully and exploit the Europe the same way they bullied and exploited the Global South for decades.

    30. Secret_Bit_3371 on

Arrogant exceptionalism alive and kicking in the Trump administration.

    31. Jealous-Hedgehog-734 on

The reason Vances commentary is so cutting is because it’s partially the truth. European democracies are experiencing issues with voters moving to the right and governments not following. However he is not saying it because he wants to help you fix your democracy, he is saying it to exploit the weaknesses in your government.
