The title is fucking horrible. Does not represent the article.

Estonian citizens and EU citizens will still be able to vote, even if they hold a Russian passport in addition to the EU citizenship.

So next thing for russia is to throw a temper tantrum and claim the russian people in estonia are oppressed by the Govt.
Theres not much you can do as a russian than starting another war for self defence.

I swear i‘ve seen this somewhere the last few years…

      WTF?!

      No! No, *no*, ***no***!

This works into Putin’s propaganda, fuck it, just fuck it, this is the dumbest thing they could have done…

EDIT: My mistake, I had a huge fight with Russophiles in my family who believe the propaganda, so I read this quickly. It seems ethnic Russians and Belarusians with Estonian citizenship are not forbidden to vote – only those with Russian and Belarusian citizenship, have I understood well?

The title says Russia/Belarusians have rights revoked, but then article says anyone without an Estonian passport will no longer be able to vote. Might as well rename title to “Botswanans lose right to vote.” Definition of rage bait.

    5. Some relevant statistics:

      2024:

Russian citizens in Estonia: 79 332 , under 16 for the next election about 4500

Belarusian citizens in Estonia: 3035, under 16 for the next election about 300

No citizenship: 62 216, under 16 for the next election about 40

Estonian citizens in Estonia: 1 127 312, under 16 for the next election about 200 000

      Total population: 1 374 687, under 16 for the next election about 220 000

Yeah this is going to have a massive impact already in the local elections this year, especially the capital Tallinn, which has always had a bit Russian leaning tilt. About double that for the 2029 elections (2024 numbers say more than double, but a lot of them will have died from old age by then).

Read the article, headline is piss-poor rage bait.
It would be a pretty obvious stipulation that you’d have to be a country’s citizen in order to vote.

If you call this journalism, I swear by Allah that I will shoot myself right here.

“Estonia removes ability of unaffiliated noncitizens to vote in its elections” – fixed the title

Unless I’m misreading this completely, being Russian, Belarussian or whatever is actually no obstacle, so long as you have an Estonian citizenship (or are from the EU)? So basically like everywhere else, but still broader than the default? Wild stuff.

Russians should be denied visas, work visas, asylum and citizenship across the EU.

      Absolutely terrible headline.

      >
The original version of the bill would have allowed Estonian citizens, stateless residents and citizens of European Union and NATO member states to vote in local elections. However, in a full chamber vote today, a proposed amendment supported by 55 MPs was added to the bill, revoking the right to vote in local elections for third-country nationals residing in Estonia, and — starting from the election after next — for stateless individuals as well.

      >Under the amendment, stateless residents will still be allowed to vote in this year’s local elections. According to the authors of the proposal, this gives stateless individuals sufficient time to apply for Estonian citizenship if they wish to participate in the following local elections as Estonian citizens. The amendment also removes voting rights for citizens of NATO member states from the bill.

      >As a result, this year’s local elections will be open to Estonian and EU citizens, as well as stateless residents. Starting from the next local elections after this one, only Estonian and EU citizens will be eligible to vote.

So (Bela)Russian citizens will still be allowed to vote if they have an Estonian or other EU citizenship in addition to their (Bela)Russian one. Only people who reside in Estonia with *only* a (Bela)Russian citizenship will be barred from voting.
