      >Four United States army soldiers have been killed in [Lithuania](https://www.theguardian.com/world/lithuania) during training, the Nato secretary general, Mark Rutte, said while visiting Warsaw on Wednesday.

      >“Whilst I was speaking the news came out about four American soldiers who were killed in an incident in Lithuania,” Rutte told reporters, adding that he did not know any details.

      >Lithuania’s military earlier on Wednesday said they were searching for four US soldiers and a tracked vehicle that had gone missing on Tuesday afternoon.

      >A statement from the US army’s [Europe](https://www.theguardian.com/world/europe-news) and Africa public affairs office in Wiesbaden, Germany, said the soldiers were conducting scheduled tactical training at the time.

      >“A possible scene has now been identified, and a search and rescue operation is under way,” the Lithuanian military said in a statement.

      >It said further information would be provided as new information becomes available.

      >The Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported that four US soldiers and a vehicle were reported missing on Tuesday afternoon during an exercise at the General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground in Pabradė, a town located less than 10km (6 miles) from the border with Belarus.

      >The Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are all Nato members and have often had chilly ties with Russia, a key ally of Belarus, since declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1990.

      >Relations soured further over Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the Lithuanian president, Gitanas Nausėda, has been one of the most outspoken supporters of Ukraine in its fight against the Russian president, Vladimir Putin’s, forces.

      >*More details soon …*

    2. Killed in the title is certainly a choice considering they drowned in a swamp.

Such a click bait title they should have said 4 US soldiers died in Lithuania.

Trump has probably promised Lithuania to Russia and will use this as a contribution for justification. Sounds crazy but I guess we won’t find out until we receive the newest group chat release.

I know it’s the secretary general who said it but damn is that a risky title

Reason: M1 Abrams does not have an evacuation hatch under the hull.

Inaccurate headline. Their vehicle, the largest armoured tracked recovery vehicle in the U.S inventory was found tipped in a swamp. They likely drowned after the exit breach was stuck or blocked.

    8. Death by accident or during training are quite common, sadly.

[From the US statistics](https://dcas.dmdc.osd.mil/dcas/app/summaryData/deaths/byYearManner), there’s around 300 US soldiers dying every year from accidents, out of the 1.3 million in active duty. Roughly the same numbers as death by suicides in that same population.

Together, suicides and accident represent 2/3 of the roughly 1000 yearly US casualties, the rest being illness and homicides.

Astonishingly, the last year hostile actions caused a triple digit number of death was… 2012 ! In 2022, 0 death were caused by hostile actions, down from 13 the year before.

Since 2012, less than 2% of dead US soldiers were killed combat (give or take). This is.. confounding.

Mark Rutte was always laughed at when he spoke English when he was prime minister of the Netherlands. But this choice of words is just damaging. What a moron.

Jezus christ this fucking idiot and his choice of words. Nobody killed them, they drowned in a swamp

    11. GoblinsOnATrenchcoat on

“Drowned in an accident” very different from “Killed”

    12. AcrobaticAd4930 on

      It’s very strange.

Lithuania’s official position is that they have drowned in a swamp, the vehicle was found but they are still looking for bodies.

So the word “killed” is not being the representation of what had actually happened. The word “drowned” would be a better choice…

    13. Trajan_Voyevoda on

How convenient for the *narrative,* suspiciously convenient to say the least.

    14. SaraAnnabelle on

Did the swamp murder them? Why is the headline so weird?

    15. Sufficient-Pound-508 on

Killed or died.. ? That is the main difference.
