Book smart, not life smart
Same as anyone else who moves to a new country with no safety net or family. Its not disproportionate its a reality that moving is expensive and for those coming from weaker economies also have less money to start off with.
Isn’t that always the case as an immigrant though?
I’m not saying it’s good or bad but as an immigrant you typically don’t have large family or friend network around you so everything is harder.
Just having a degree alone wouldn’t buy you a half a million flat or house
Supply and Demand.
You do not help a supply side issue by throwing gasoline on the fire and inflaming demand by allowing *limitless immigration. Especially when demand is already so high.
Those coming here do so knowing the housing issues we have. And those who don’t prior to moving should learn to use the internet. Bracing for the snowflakes detached from reality to come along.
It is not racist to have concerns about immigration when it’s already at unsustainable levels.
Not exactly surprising. And I know this is an unpopular opinion, but immigration isn’t exacerbating problems with the housing market, it’s vice versa. Unemployment is 3.9%, which is actually too low, there are jobs not being filled. If you’re working in construction you’ll know factories are basically held up by immigration. The Irish economy needs more people, and unfortunately people won’t have children if they don’t have a house, and immigrants find themselves in poverty because they can’t get a house either
Education will not save you from poverty in Ireland. Welcome to hidden Ireland. The side the politicians pretend don’t exist.
Irish migrants to Switzerland hit disproportionately after housing costs…
Aw boohoo

Utter car crash of an article.
Education is a weird benchmark for buying a house.
>More than 77 per cent of Irish-born people own a home, compared with 37 per cent of foreign-born residents, with eastern Europeans and those from outside the EU least likely to own a property. More than 70 per cent of eastern Europeans live in private rental accommodation.
Turns out if you already own a home and don’t have to get ripped off in the rental market, you’re less likely to be poor.
The bigger problem is excessive taxation that works against bonafide idea of skilled immigration. Ireland need serious taxation reforms. Netherlands for e.g. have reduced taxation for first two years for skilled visa holders. That help people gain a foot
High taxes + High housing costs + High consumption taxes pretty much dilutes any positive gains for the new comers
“while 14.5 per cent are at risk of poverty, compared with 11 per cent of Irish-born people.”
Completely pointless article and data.
Comparing the migrants situation against all of the Irish population, a good cohort of the Irish population are alright Jack eg the 40yr old plus homeowner generation, younger Irish generations are equally as fcuked if not worse because we don’t have a home country we can easily return too
