Meloni: gli europei devono “difenderci” in caso di guerra commerciale statunitensi

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has cautioned against a trade war ahead of President Donald Trump’s expected announcement of sweeping new tariffs targeting US trade partners.

“We must do everything we can to prevent a trade war that would benefit neither the US nor Europe,” Meloni said on Wednesday. However, she added that Europeans must be prepared to “defend ourselves if necessary.”

Meloni voiced particular concern about potential tariffs on Italian agricultural products.

The right-wing prime minister is considered one of the most important contacts for the US government among European leaders. Trump has praised her on several occasions. Meloni has also visited him twice in recent months.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella called Trump’s planned tariffs a “serious mistake” and urged a unified European response that is both “calm and decisive.”

Trump is set to announce new tariffs on imports in a speech at the White House Rose Garden at 4 pm (2000 GMT). For weeks, he has been promoting April 2 as “Liberation Day” in the United States.

Wasn’t Trump supposed to be her best buddy? Now, she’s worrying about tariffs on Italian agricultural products and wants Europe to defend itself!!! How can we defend ourselves if traitors like her are doing their best to undermine the foundations of the EU?

The idiocy of the European far right is astonishing. Five months ago, all of them were praising Trump as if he were the Messiah that would “liberate” Europe from Brussels and now they realize he doesn’t give a damn about them or their countries.

Don’t get your hopes high, it’s her party’s indecisive pattern all over again: when the moment to retaliate against Trump’s tariffs will come, she will maliciously find a silly pretext to avoid directly siding with the EU.

Her party did run on the ‘Italy is a colony of Germany and France, the EU is a dictatorship’ message for ages and people in the party actually believe this shit. She also has to fend off attacks coming from the even more populist Salvini, who is already trying to steal her votes (the opposite happened 2 years ago) and her allies (notably, Musk) running on the same exact rhetoric she had to soften because phony propaganda met reality. She’s a MAGA, never forget that. She couldn’t care less of Italy or Europe as long as she can keep staying in power
