Of course it does. France is a major arms dealer and excluding Canada, and especially the UK, means it will take more money.

It’s nothing about defence and all about money to France at this point.

    2. ziplock9000 on

Remember this Europe when Russia comes knocking. France majorly crippled our collective defence by excluding big players so they could make more money.

      >The thorniest issue, however, is whether the U.K., Canada **and the U.S.** would be allowed to take part in joint purchases under the initiative.

      I beg your pardon.

    4. Gammelpreiss on

And here we have the reason why nobody wants France to be in the EUs drivers seat. They are way too self absorbed.

Fucking Fish in times like these.

    5. The fundamental problem with British companies is that they are too intertwined with the American military-industrial complex.

For example, BAE makes 40% of its turnover in the USA and employs 32,000 people there.

Opening up the emerging EU market to them is like offering a back door to Lockheed Martin and co.

    6. Jumpy-Plantain9812 on

The UK is understandable, but I’m sorry, Canada is so vulnerable, so impractical to defend, so vast, and has little to no military might to make up for it.

      >France is determined to secure more advantageous fishing rights in return for a pact, officials say.

Ffs fishing rights out of all the things!?!

France stop putting petty french interests over critical interests that affects us all for once please.

It’s hard to trust Macron when he talks about putting Europe first, because if any Europe first policy causes a slight inconvenience to France, they’ll just block it.

      Politico bingo :
      Bash France ✅
Use an anonymous diplomat source ✅ (trust me bro)
Deliberately omit certain important details ✅
      Mix EU and Europe ✅

      Beside :
I don’t know how this has become controversial that EU funds are used within and for the EU?

You forgot to mention that the article also says some country that would like to open it to the US, which is a big no.

    9. Mysterious_Tea on

UK and Canada are not part of EU.

It makes sense to make sure Euros will be spent in made in EU.

Germany can start building their own weapon industries -and profit from them-, nobody is holding them back.

The ghost of de Gaulle still haunts French foreign policy.

    11. Think_Training3772 on

France is right, the UK and canada are nations that are way too close to the US, they could have been doing things differently but they choose on purpose to be tied up to the US.

Unlike France who always had in mind that what is happening now could happen, that’s why the french army is composed of french weapons and products that are composed with only french equipement and materiel, because the rule number one stated by De Gaulle was to have an army completely independant from any foreign manufacturer.

That’s also why they have a completely independant nuclear arsenal made in France that they can use by themselves while the UK leases american ballistict Trident missile, and the only way the UK could use its arsenal would be with the authorisation of the US…

And that’s why France wants the EU to be independant too in term of defense.

But keep bashing the frenchies…it’s easier.

      >A smaller group of countries also supported greater involvement of the U.S.

We should just stop hoping for anything EU-wide in terms of military, too many countries are just terminally and hopelessly stupid.

    13. Confident-Bug-201 on

Now is seriously not the time to be squabbling over this.

    14. kplowlander on

For UK, maybe if they produce and design all components in UK then they should be let in. And make sure the US has no veto power on the weapons made with UK components. That’s my biggest fear.

    15. Crazy-Canuck463 on

As a Canadian, i can assure you we understand. Right now it is critical for europe to unite, and if that means Canada has to wait, so be it. Canada will always see the EU as our allies, and we will be right beside you if Russia goes for it. With the step back of America, the EU needs to unify. Canada and the EU can strengthen our ties when the time allows, for now, Europe needs to worry about Europe.

    16. DefiantTop5 on

France and other nations being self-interested?!? The horrors. Sounding more and more like Trump every day.

    17. ClearHeart_FullLiver on

How is politico still allowed on this sub? It’s an atrocious news site.

    18. NoxAstrumis1 on

Why doesn’t France want to hang out with us? We like France. Let us love you!

    19. Hopeful-Image-8163 on

Government are free to purchase equipment from the UK and Canada but it needs to happen separately…. Meaning not using EU budget outside the EU… it would be like saying that the farming subsidies should be used to subsidise Canada too lol

    20. This is golden opportunity to get the UK back into working more closely with the EU and hopefully getting us on a pathway back to the single market. Fuck France for ruining it.

    21. magneticpyramid on

It’s either EU OR European defence.
If the EU wants to go it alone, they are free to do so.

It looks like the UK might miss out on some sales, but will also save itself a fortune as it won’t have to upscale/up spend to defend Europe.

    22. Shigonokam on

Why does Politico like to bash France that much? What have they done to them?

    23. mnessenche on

No US arms, never. UK and Canada can be negotiated, but preference must be given to the EU

    24. PneumaEnChrono on

France could do with a poke.
      Screw your fish…
      You need UK military.

    25. DutchDispair on

I will back France, who has been hawkish on defense issues, over Germany, who has been… anything but in recent memory. Sorry Germany.

If Britain wants Eurobuxx they will have to throw us a bone. Politics is nothing if not petty.

    26. Deareim2 on

And this is why, ladies and gentlemen, even as pro EU, i am not optimistic on future. If it is not France, it is another country. We cannot simply align for the greater good. no, we are just focusing on ourselves.

      so fucking depressive.

    27. PokerLemon on

Again same mistakes. We need to get along well ourselves…EU should be enough if we do things correctly.

They decided to get out of the Union it’s time to assimilate it

    28. Frosty_Manager_1035 on

Ignoring the bias against the French, I support Canada and the UK (as a dual national) joining an EU defense deal. It will require a large coalition of like minded democratic nations to stand up against Trump and Putin and all of our futures depend on this. Interested in links to any less biased information on the pros and cons of including UK/Canada without singling out who is on which side within the EU if anyone can point me that way. Thank you!

    29. CreativeWriting00179 on

It’s an EU fund for EU purposes. It’s not about NATO, and it’s not about individual countries subject to the rearmament – they still have independent defence spending, as every country does. I don’t think there’s a single EU country that doesn’t procure something from BAE Systems, but the whole point here is to invest in our own production.

Personally, I’m not opposed to include Canada and UK in the deal, but I can see reasons, both economic and military ones, for limiting the scope of spending this fund within EEA and select countries subject to other agreements.

    30. Salt-Confidence9561 on

It’s always France, so quick to forget all the support they have had in the modern day and chooses to shun others based on greed and butthurt sentiment, no wonder so many people hate the French, sheesh.

The UK wants to join and defend Europe as a whole because whether the UK is part of the EU collective it is still a part of EUROPE, heck even South Korea and Japan are joining.

    31. Absolutely normal. The French idea is the same of Germany: to be Europe’s leader. With other countries, the job should be harder.
