Ironic is that the Transnistria War is the only war where Ukrainian nationalists and the Russian Army fought on the same side, but for different reasons: the Ukrainians wanted to annex Transnistria (and possibly Moldova), while the Russians wanted to stop Moldova’s pro-Western foreign policy, including a possible reunification with Romania. The Russians partially succeded tho. The pro-Western and pro-Romanian government of Valeriu Muravschi and the Popular Front of Moldova was replaced by a pro-Russian Agrarian government, dominated by the former communist elite (many of them voted against Moldovan independence from the USSR in 1991, now they were pretending to by Moldovan patriots against “Romanian chauvinism”), which will rule and dominate Moldova for the next decades.
