      **Disclaimer:**
No matter my decision regarding Spotify, there would be people upset. Either for including them at all given their history, or not including them given their prominence.

I decided the best middle ground would be to include them in the deep-dive guide, but not include them here. People can read the reasons why and decide whether that matters to them or not.

This will probably upset both camps equally, which hopefully means it is the fairest path.

The deep-dive guide on music can be found here:

Super minor gripe but you used the wrong Firefox logo. The one you used is Mozilla’s logo. The current Firefox one still has an actual fox on it.

No StartPage? It’s headquartered in the Netherlands and is my search engine of choice now.

      This is superb work! Bravo.

One question I have is why do you have both the ‘B’ – Boycott US and the gray “not majority EU owned”? They mostly overlap. Audiobooks [.] com was the only one I could see that wasn’t gray but also doesn’t have a ‘B’ on it. Does that mean it comes from a country outside of the EU but not the US?

Why is Spotify not listed under the music apps? It’s a swedish company

Ecosia also has it’s own browser with build in add block

Good list, it gives you some info but you yourself need to take steps to actually stand up against the greed of US.
Tarifs are about goods. We might as well put tarifs on US services…
BS that the big part of companies quietly pays monthly fees for everything. Veeam, Cisco, Microsoft, iCloud, etc.. What would happen if we keep those transfers regional…

I don’t think any of Audible alternatives as good as Audible unfortunately.

    9. BlueSky should be in the left column. They might lean far left now, but so did Twitter in the past, and they’re both US companies. Also, it’s missing OnlyOffice. More modern and polished than LibreOffice, also European, and open source as well.

I still have a looong way to go. But at least I moved to Europe.

As a Canadian trying to boycott American stuff I also thank you (not a lot of Canadian alternatives for big tech)

honestly i don’t care, the turn into protectionism is a somewhat bad thing

ZeitKapsl seems cool, but their number of users are limited. Would love to get a plan for my family but its not enough.

Proton mail is really good for those who desire and/or need encrypted email.

Jottacloud are great for file storage. Mac, Windows, and mobile apps. Norwegian company and servers and data storage, 100% renewable energy powered, so that’s an added bonus.

Ha ha I am using those services for years but btw thanks for the detailed information ℹ️!

An easy first step is changing Chrome+ Google search for, for instance, Vivaldi + Qwant. I made it several weeks ago and everything is ok.

One major change will be using some Linux distribution and a European social media and a message app.

Boycot where it is correct to do so, not where it doesn’t do much!
Google and Microsoft don’t need to be boycotted. They are heavily regulated and global players, just with their seat in the US.

Great list but shows us all how powerful American tech has become. These EU options are largely unknowns.

Jottacloud. Norwegian alternative to Google drive / one drive and google photos. It has lots of great built in functions like AI search. Compliant to strict Norwegian security laws and is of course GDPR compliant.

Great list again! Love that it gets updated often.

Will give Zeitkapsl a try next.

I want to support this, but imagine the pain to switch to a different email after 25 years?

    23. TramEatsYouAlive on

YouTube Music -> Spotify (Sweden, actually). Probably the best alternative to YT Music, even not taking all that US thing into account

    24. The e-mail alternatives are just not real alternatives, at least not if you’re not willing to pay. Unfortunately. I can’t realistically really move from Gmail to proton without paying a lot to have just a fraction of the free storage I currently have at Gmail. Europe seriously need to invest.

Why isn’t Firefox under the Privacy badge? It is definitely a big privacy focused browser compared to Chrome and Edge. Moreover if you really don’t like Mozilla at least put also LibreWolf that’s basically Firefox with the most privacy-focused settings enabled by default.

As a German in amerika I can’t afford that… but I will boycott as many MAGA businesses as I can

    27. CuteGothMommy on

Except chrome to firefox, the alternatives offered just aren’t it to be honest. Especially for audible and emails. Not as if you can transfer your audible library.
