      >An investigation is under way after a section of a walking route in Co Mayo was destroyed by a fire over the weekend.

      >The purpose-built walkway on the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail was extensively damaged in blaze on Friday night.

      >The National Parks and Wildlife Service says the trail will remain closed until further notice.

      >It says clean up and repair works cannot commence until the investigation into the fire is completed.

      >In a post on social media, the NPWS described the scene in the aftermath of the fire as “heartbreaking”.

      >The two kilometre boardwalk leads into the Wild Nephin National Park and had attracted thousands of visitors annually since it opened around a decade ago.

I really hope they start prosecuting anyone & everyone who starts these fires.

That’s really appalling. That’s both a beautiful thing for the local community and an important piece of tourism infrastructure.

Who in their right mind would do something like that to their own community?

There are times this place would drive you around the twist.

I’m not a “throw the book” at people person but this behaviour has been going on for decades and the only reason it continues is that people see the benefit as outweighing the risk. That has to change.

I cannot understand why someone would do this. “Yeah, let’s destroy access to nature!”

It’s really times like this where a country wide monitoring system of automatic licence plate readers would come in really handy. Imagine if all these remote carparks had them set up and after antisocial behaviour or situations like this the gardai only had to look at all the carparks around and get a list of possible people involved to follow up on.

At the moment they’ve nothing to go on.

We’re paying farmers to set these fires!!

If they stop the sheep subsidies and the upland sheep farmers will stop burning areas to increase grass growth.

That’s horrible. I hope whoever did it is caught

That is truly awful and with the state of the place it will be a long time before it’s even worth restoring. Very sad for all the people who loved walking there.
