Saluti ⛰️🐐

hm stay in austria, don’t just travel through us, that is rude!
should be really sunny in the mountains on Friday 11. April so go for the scenic route!
Ultra fast tourism like that is so destructive. To people, communities and the nature.
Something else to consider: The construction works on the Autobahn a bit after Salzburg might be quite tedious when there’s lots of traffic on a weekend.
Visually both routes are decent, IMO.
The second route is gorgeous to drive. Just note that it will probably take more than hour longer as you will need to drive through a bunch of towns, meaning more traffic and just overall slower driving.
Just take the fxcking train. Transit is devastating our country
Dont forget to buy a vignette
I will not comment on this as you use us just as your transit… I am disappointed xD
I’d go with the second route. Forecast looks good for the weekend, enjoy your drive!
The fast way is Autobahn only including one heavy tunnel construction site
if you want to chill and enjoy take route 2
Why would you rent a car for that route?

When do you want to go through Salzburg?
There is a big construction site going on south to Salzburg city where traffic jam can get immense.
you can check here for a forecast https://www.asfinag.at/bauen-erhalten/bauprojekte/a-10-tauern-autobahn-tunnelerneuerung-golling-werfen/
Another vote for the second Route
At this point why not take a train? I wouldn’t want to be stuck in a car for hours like that
second one is more beautiful and nice to drive
Take Track 2!
For one it is way more prettier and exciting and for the other part the easter holidays start tommorow and the A10 from Salzburg southwards will be full as hell and the construction site makes it even worse
Great response! And I agree with all of you guys that say travel by train, buss etc. Good that you push environmental friendly options! Reason for renting a car is since the route is Munich -> Ljublana -> Zagreb -> Budapest -> Vienna -> Munich. Its probably doable with train/busses as well for 4 people. But my pregnant wife which is over 4 months into the pregnancy period with documented prelvic gridle pain make the car a no brainer for us this time. But I agree with all of you on general basis! We will try to leave some well spent money in the mountain villages and the days we will stay in Vienna!
2nd Route, plan for a stop in Lienz. The First Route – Tauern Autobahn – is not beautiful at all and risky for getting stuck in a congestion.
Route 1 can be nice, but personally, I find the part between Rosenheim and Bischofshofen (around the second “construction work” sign) rather boring.
Route 2 is definitely the more scenic route. Time difference per Google Maps is mostly due to the fact that route 1 is primarily Autobahn (130km/h), whereas route 2 includes more Bundesstraße/Landstraße (100km/h, with some 70km/h parts in between), which I always prefer, especially when driving on my own.
Keep in mind though, that some of the locals will probably ignore those speed limits and try to overtake you whenever there is the slightest chance for them. Also, it is possible that there are some farm tractors on the road (they usually go like 20-50km/h tops), so you on the other hand should be comfortable with overtaking them. What I am trying to say is, if you are not at least a semi-experienced diver, route 2 could turn out to be more stressful because it requires more of your attention.
Re: stops
Not sure what your plan is, but I would probably try to grab a coffee or a snack in Ellmau/Going am Wilden Kaiser for the view, alternatively in Mittersil, which is a tiny bit bigger and has probably more to offer (like 3 cafes instead of 2 or sth lol) if you need a break after around 2h. Lienz would be another nice place, but it will take you around 3h to get there. If you need another break later on, or want dinner, make an additional stop in Villach. You pretty much go there anyway, so you could as well just drive into the city and see if you find a nice place in the old town center.
