      >He had two previous convictions.

      >He was given a four-year jail sentence in 2019 for a serious assault on a man in 2017 with the last two years of the sentence suspended.

      >Three years ago, he was fined €2,000 after being caught speeding at 160kph on 16 April 2021

      >A driver who killed a nine-year-old boy, while driving at twice the speed limit, fled the scene of the incident and then went on a drugs and drink binge has been sentenced to five years in prison and disqualified for driving for 20 years

5 years is a fucking joke for this scumbag

    2. Important_Farmer924 on

The lad who went straight to the pub afterwards?

5 years is an absolute slap in the face for that family.

    3. United_Plum_2209 on

This is not a deterrent, it lets the scum of the country see that you can kill a young lad, drive off, go to the pub and long as you say you’re sorry then you’ll get fuck all of a sentence.

    4. SugarInvestigator on

They need to reactivate taht 2 year suspension on top of teh 5 he just recieved. Cunt

    5. Minions-overlord on

I’d pretend to be surprised, however its become tiring to do it so often. Instead, i might go rob a few banks, considering all I’ll get is a mild telling off

    6. DirectorRich5445 on

Imagine if this was your child. He literally drove off and went to the pub after killing your child. Then gets 5 years. Honestly this country has so much potential by just doing the simple things correct – but just continues to fail us in every aspect week on week.

    7. justsayinbtw on

It pisses me off the you’re allowed use ADHD and austisim as an excuse to be a cunt.

      Question for any journalist here:

Why, like in this article, is it always written for car accidents/deaths “the car he was driving struck X”?

Shouldn’t it be “he struck X”. It’s like saying “the gun he was firing shot X”.

I know the answer may relate to intentionality – please confirm – but he was convicted of dangerous driving because he struck a 9 year old boy. It’s like saying he wasn’t in control of the car. HE chose to drive his car fast and HE struck the boy and HE killed the boy.

    9. fileanaithnid on

It’d be one thing for drink driving and killing someone, still beyond awful and warrants way more than 5 years. But I’ve always thought killing someone in a hit and run should be charged the same as murder

    10. Utter scum-bag also from the article, complete idiot as well.

“The report showed the windscreen and front side windows of the Skoda were tinted below the 65% legal threshold, which would have restricted the driver’s view to restricted light transparency levels.

The driver’s seat was also declined to such an extent that his vision would have been greatly reduced and that he was barely able to hold the steering wheel.”

    11. Can only imagine how gutted the poor lads family are with this sentence.

Coward getting away with 5 years after this is disgusting.

    12. United_Plum_2209 on

The more you read about this the more you realise just how big of an insult this sentence. It is truly pathetic and the judge should be ashamed.

    13. sureyouknowurself on

5 years for a life time, seems so unfair. Should be a much longer sentence.

    14. Chairman-Mia0 on

And how much of that 5 years is he likely to actually serve? 3?

    15. This might be the most egregious sentence I’ve seen in quite some time. Already been jailed for assault, caught going 160 previously, killed a child going twice the speed limit, didn’t stop, then gets plastered and tests positive for cocaine? This should be a life sentence. He has nothing to contribute to society

    16. BillyMooney on

Illegally tinted windscreen and all. How many people in the driver’s family and circle knew well of the tinted windscreen, but no one considered doing anything about it.

    17. TheEndsOfInvention22 on

I knew this guy was going to get a shocking low amount of jail time. Just below this r/Ireland post was an older one about a kid killed in Cork a few years back by a dangerous driver with no mitigating circumstances – he got 3 years for ending a young life.
There was a prime time video posted yesterday about the lucky dip gang, stolen car, hit and run that killed a guy walking home from the pub, his brother was interviewed and his utter dismay describing the long list of offences the driver had which was in the 100s.

    18. I hate this country sometimes 5 years is a joke even 20 years no driving he should never be allowed drive again ffs

    19. spoonman_82 on

he should never see the light of day again. It sounds like an exaggeration, but fuck him all the way to hell. what a despicable piece of human trash.

    20. EricBanna on

Could someone please explain why it’s only 5 years for this? Not looking for an emotional answer, just what is this massive problem with sentencing that this can happen..? And what could really be done to fix it? In my view, there is no reason this shouldn’t be a life sentence.

    21. Horror_Finish7951 on

If you murder someone in Ireland you get life* in prison. If you murder them behind the wheel of a car, you’re quite unlucky if you’re given a custodial sentence.

My thoughts are with the family, but we really, really need minimum sentences for dangerous driving especially when it’s a hit-and-run and especially when the victims are vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

Every one of these paltry sentences essentially tells the victims’ families that the victims’ lives weren’t worth much at all, and that the car has to remain king.

If the people are unhappy with this sentence, the people will take justice into their own hands

“The car struck Ronan with such force that he was moved 58 metres from the point of impact.”
      Sickening.

    24. BobbyKonker on

      This is terrible.

The lesson from the judge is that if you ever hit someone in your car and kill them it’s worth doing a runner. The consequences of getting caught are worth the risk. In fact go and treat yourself to some pints and drugs. Don’t sweat it too much.

    25. Christ… Super depressing to read this, he had a modified car, says that his seat was so reclined he had trouble seeing and holding the steering wheel. All that and still going double the speed limit.

You should immediately go back to jail if you’re found driving a car on suspended license too after killing someone. Lads like this will be in the news 6 months after he gets out for driving without tax or insurance.

    26. Inside-Bunch4216 on

That sentence is shocking, how the fuck did they come up with that?

    27. AlarmingLackOfChaos on

Reading that is article is tough. It’s not only just the boy he killed. He struck the 9 year old who was walking with two other children and sent him flying 58 meters from the point of impact.

He’s given two other children life long trauma as well.

    28. 2 prior convictions one for driving at 160km for which he was given a fine. Right.

    29. No-Pressure1811 on

      Disgusting sentence.

Bundoran in the summer is full of families and children, this would be like driving by a school at home time going 100 kmh +.

He went to the pub and nightclub and posted snapchats of himself.

The “assault” he carried out was slashing the face of a tourist in his late 50’s in Donegal town.

      It’s actually disgraceful.

    30. RustyNewWrench on

I can’t even begin to feel you how much I hate judges in this country.

I thought courts were a deterrent for revenge. 5 years ?
