I don’t know the corresponding phrase in Ukrainian but what my grandfather always said in situations like this is “Those that straddled the fence are often impaled by it”

The Ukrainians are fighting to defend their homes and their families.

The Russians are engaging in vicious territorial expansion like they have been doing since the 18th century

The people that should be held to account (and yet somehow never are) are those that stand in the middle waiting to see who will come out on top THEN pick a side and pretend like they were on their side the entire time.

Lacking moral clarity?
