“Please come back, I’ll do anything. Would you like more tariffs?”

    2. potatolulz on

But the US showed that the tariffs thing is a matter of overnight decisions and obvious market manipulation scheme, so it’s not a reliable trade or negotiation partner. Like EU “pulls away from China” and US seemingly “cuts tariffs” but that can change the next day again, as they already showed several times in just three months, so what would that have been for, making the effort and getting harassed again by the US that can’t keep their shit straight for one single week?

    3. Machicomon on

Trump: “Why aren’t my tariffs working?”

Trump staffer: “Did you try turning them off and on again?”

    4. Altruistic_Two9719 on

As an American – fuck their demands. Stand strong Europe and let maga implode in its fascist bonfire.

    5. PixelationIX on

EU should not listen and continue opening up more trades with China. They are much more stable partner and aren’t gonna change on a whim every 4 years.

If EU listens, Trump will get ego boost and then slap them back with by invading Greenland or higher tariff. Stop listening to this Orange buffoon because he does not care about you.

      1. Impose nonsense tariffs for no reason on your allies.
      2. Allies start shifting to the competitor.
      3. Demand they shift back in order to remove tariffs.
      4. The only thing that changed compared to before is diminished trust in US.
      5. Claim victory and call yourself a master negotiator.
      6. Blame Biden for anything bad.

      Trump’s plan probably.

    7. zekoslav90 on

      Step 1: Create a problem.
Step 2: Wait for someone to solve the problem.
      Step 3: Remove the problem.
      Step 4: I’m a genius.

It just feels to me choosing CN would make more sense for us economically

NO. Troops leaving blackmail next? This is the new art of the deal?! No, thank you! Good bye!

    10. StandardRough6404 on

Is it only me or does the USA always try to start a hot or Cold War against anyone that’s even close to be some kind of competition?

    11. Flaky-Ad3980 on

But as he said the EU was built to damage the US – so why would we help Donnie??

    12. >The briefings suggest that the US is willing to consider a trade deal with the EU on these terms – but it would also want the EU to limit or discontinue non-tariff barriers to trade, potentially including stringent EU product standards, including some food standards.

So basically, their trade deal is: destroy your own economy, and also let our pesticide/hormone/sugar filled food in your markets.

      Insane, literal insane demands.

Only If you win the war against Russia for us and give back all Ukrainian territory

    14. SmartCookingPan on

Ok, but even if Europe decided to do it, what guarantee is there that Trump isn’t gonna change his mind a million times about it?

China is stable at least, the USA is not. That’s what happens when you destroy the trust people had in the country.

    15. mishalobdell on

Only if US says ‘Thank you’

Actually, nah…this would still not work

    16. Urabraska- on

If I was EU. I’d say sure. We’ll make that deal. When Trump recends his “emergency” tariff powers back to congress and New laws that will prevent this from ever happening again. Otherwise China is welcoming with open arms and no threats.

Otherwise he will just get what he wants then drop 200% tariffs on the EU because the bully tactics worked last time.

    17. riiiiiich on

What is wrong with this attitude in the US government? They lash out with threats and attacks on their allies and then get all shitty and gaslighty when they turn their back on them. They behave like petulant children, crying that no one likes them any more without any insight into their own behaviour. They’ve literally ruined the US through the complete and wholesale destruction of their soft power and dependability and it will be a slow, painful death as all of their allies and trading partners move away from them over the course of years. I mean, *demand*, how dare they!

    18. Positive_Chip6198 on

I think we have had enough demands from the US this week, maybe time for the US to take a nap or something.

    19. Repulsive-Shock-741 on

😆 so weak, they shouldn’t though Trump will blackmail them again later

    20. The Americans don’t seem to understand that if they don’t want to protect Europe and additionally support Putin then Europe has no obligations to them and can trade with whomever it wants.

    21. saltyholty on

They’ll just apply them again. The US can’t be trusted. We need a wide array of trade partners to protect ourselves.

    22. Cabbage_Vendor on

Someone actually competent could’ve fought and won a trade war with China. Many countries had goodwill towards the US and ill will towards China. Yet Trump first burned all those bridges and then wants to start his trade war, with no allies left.

    23. Major_Boot2778 on

As a former red, white and blue blooded American, and current proud European, I say fuck the US.

I used to believe that the Western world would melt to one political entity in the next century or two, including Russia, as science and teach breakthroughs came at breakneck speeds and we all played nice. Then Ukraine happened and Russia was out. I felt kind of betrayed, fooled, but oh well, the West can still unite, one step closer to the Star Trek one world order future that I envisioned, with America leading us into a multi planetary species and society. Now I see America isn’t our partner but a competitor and perhaps even a betrayer.

And it only takes the one time breaking trust to do permanent damage. We were in a position that we were all happy being lead by America; as I saw described here once, everyone was happy to ride the America bus and help pay for gas as long as the driver pulled over when asked. Now we know the driver might not do that, and getting on that bus doesn’t make sense anymore.

I almost feel like this is a strategic response to perceived depending bonds between EU and China where the US saw an upcoming war or trade war with China and thought they lacked the popularity leverage for the EU to choose sides, so they tried to create leverage with tariffs…. But in the end, this is nothing more than a Mafia style shakedown; come in, wreck the place, and demand money for protectionnot wrecking the place again. No, giving in is wrong on so many levels and will only lead to future subversion. This is what Trump did shutting off intel to Ukraine in order to try to force them to accept terms they didn’t want.

I used to look at China as a somewhat malicious competitor but those views are relative and with the epiphany of America’s recent self incrimination I don’t see China as a partner but definitely a trade potential. The Star Trek dream is now yet another step away (thanks ~~Obama~~ Trump), but hopefully the EU will still unite, and in best case scenario we will pull Canada, Australia, Japan and maybe even Korea along with us. In the meantime, China offers good deals and I like Hong Shao Rou more than pot roast, anyway. So, fuck America.
