Cue the “well they can’t provide the same prices as a 1.8 trillion dollar company so they won’t have my business” comments
Anyone buying on the .ie was already ordering from the .co.uk, pointless moaning.
The prices on [Amazon.ie](http://Amazon.ie) don’t seem that good really so far. I have had a look but not spent any money with them yet.
Nope, will not be using Amazon.
Local shops or if I need to order Kenny’s in Galway have free delivery and far better prices than any of the Amazon sites.
As always with these articles there’s a bit of a misunderstanding as to why someone might use Amazon. It’s not necessarily price at all. I’d be inclined to use it over AN Other bookseller because it’s more likely to have the book, I don’t need to login and put in payment details etc.
I do use Irish booksellers when I can but I’d suggest to all of them to simplify their checkout process as much as possible. Have Apple Pay etc so there’s no login/friction etc.
Fuck Amazon
What Amazon does brilliantly is their whole delivery process. Irish companies need to match them if they want to compete. I’m sick of using An Post or dodgy courier companies. Never sure when your stuff is going to arrive.
Who actually buys from Amazon?
A while ago, I stopped into Easons to get a book. I knew the author and title, just wasn’t sure what section it was in, so I asked the lad behind the helpdesk. He told me I could get it on Amazon for cheaper.
It’s funny that it’s the bookshops leading the charge against Amazon in Ireland.
I don’t think anyone has considered Amazon a bookshop in years. They are basically a replacement to Argos at this stage. Last thing I bought from them was a new pair of swimming goggles. I couldn’t find them anywhere in Ireland.
Who is going to buy from the .ie website that wasn’t already buying from the UK website? It was already cheap and usually had 2-3 day delivery.
Last time I bought a book from a small Irish bookshop website
It took 3 weeks to be delivered.
It’s one and a half kilometres from my house.
Fuck Amazon too. Nazi-loving motherfucker.
Won’t be a threat if it stays as terrible as it is.
News just in: Monopolies are bad…
That ship sailed years ago, in the case of Amazon.i.e. people would already have been using [amazon.co.uk](http://amazon.co.uk) for years!
Brick and mortar bookstores cannot compete on price, I occasionally go to Kenny’s in Galway, they occasionally do book readings with the author, signed first editions et cetera.
This is one of the ways independent bookstores can compete and differentiate themselves.
To be honest as far as I can tell the biggest danger to them isn’t from online retailers selling physical books it’s from applications like audible and the like selling more convenient audiobooks.
I assume there’s no demand for amazon ie because it’s shite?
I exclusively buy second hand books from Oxfam and other similar orgs or on world of books.com which is amazing and cheap.
You will all sleep easy now you know that I’m sure.
I’m just going to say they’ll never replace the relate experience of a book shop and it’ll be hell before I see them go in Ireland. They are a national treasure and I don’t mind small inconvenience. I think plenty will still think this way. I hope so anyway
Amazon, its business and employment practices and its owner are a cancer. People quibbling over having to pay an extra couple of euro for a book in a local shop astonish me. Towns and cities in Ireland increasingly consist of coffee shops and vape/phone repair joints. Stuffing more money in Geoff Bezos pocket rather than a local shop is morally very dodgy for the sake of saving a few quid
Right now for me if there’s something that I need to buy I’ll have to go with the cheaper option. If that option also includes free next day delivery, it’s pretty much a no-brainer to go with that.
I’ve actually stopped buying anything from Amazon since Bezos attended Trump’s inauguration. Fuck Amazon.
This is just a rehashed conversation from the time Amazon kindle started…. Some like it, others buy books from shop.
Its no more dangerous than it was before .ie.
Fuck Jeff Bozo. Ebay all the way.
A few days ago I wanted to buy a book, and added it to my cart on amazon.ie. €80 on Amazon, delivery in 2 days. Decided to check the Irish stores to be a good citizen, and discovered that most bookstores here didn’t even have it, Eason’s was out of stock but €90, and Kennys was the only one to technically have it in stock, for €100 with 15 to 20 working day delivery. Guess which one I went for? The one that was cheaper, had it in stock, and didn’t take about a month to deliver.
If Irish bookstores want to survive, they have to be competitive.
I go to Amazon to price a book. Okay, €9. Easons is €9.20 online but sure look I’ll go into the shop and get it because I need it within 2 days, also nice to support a local business.
I go into Easons, it’s actually €11.20. Turns out there’s an online only price and things are more expensive in store. Say fuck it and order it from Amazon for €2 less for the same product and free next day delivery with Prime. This is how they’re losing out, it’s just a better service.
I love places like Chapters in Dublin because you can get some rare old secondhand books. Places like Easons and Dubray you’re just being charged more for the same product.
Get competitive or exit the market. The issue with local booksellers is that they’re priced incredibly highly. I actually prefer going to them to buy books but I’ve cut back as a result of prices. You can’t expect reasonable people to shop there when the alternative on Amazon is cheaper
