It’s their nosy neighbour again. They are always up to some bad things. Well, evil things, let’s call it for what it is
**Poland will spend a record €930 million on cybersecurity this year, the country’s digital minister has announced, citing a 23% increase in cyberattacks in 2024, most of which he said were orchestrated by Russia and its ally Belarus.**
The move comes after Warsaw blamed Moscow and Minsk earlier this month for “planned and well-organized” cyberattacks targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform (PO) party, the main force in Poland’s ruling coalition.
Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski warned that the attack, which [aimed to hack into computers belonging to PO employees](https://tvpworld.com/85971402/poland-accuses-russia-and-belarus-of-cyberattack-ahead-of-presidential-elections), could be part of a broader attempt by Russia to influence Poland’s upcoming presidential election.
Many European nations have accused Russia of interfering in the democratic process, with Moscow being blamed for meddling in the presidential elections held in Moldova and Romania last year.
The accusations led to Romania’s ballot being annulled, prompting a serious political crisis in the country.
The presidential vote in Poland, scheduled for May 18, is seen as critical for Tusk’s government, which has had to work alongside President Andrzej Duda, a politician aligned with the right-wing opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, since coming into power in December 2023.
The two [frontrunners](https://tvpworld.com/86190836/polands-presidential-race-the-favorite-the-plodder-and-the-dark-horse) in the race are Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, from Tusk’s centrist PO, and PiS-backed independent candidate Karol Nawrocki.

Gawkowski said on Wednesday that last year, the Polish authorities recorded 111,660 cybersecurity incidents.
“Belarus and Russia are behind the majority of the incidents,” he said, adding that these included hacker attacks, misinformation and “sabotage” operations targeting critical infrastructure.
Gawkowski also reported on the growing number of malicious activities against water and sewage infrastructure but added that the ministry had decided not to disclose further information on the matter.
“In recent days we observed an increased activity of Russian hackers and groups prepared for this purpose, targeting in particular critical infrastructure related to water and sewage systems,” Gawkowski said, adding that Poland had maintained a 99% success rate in thwarting such attacks.
He continued: “Today, Poland is spending the most on cybersecurity in its history.
“If we combine the two important paths, the civilian and military ones… Poland’s cybersecurity expenditures are reaching 4 billion złoty (€930 million).”
Gawkowski expressed hope for the adoption, by the end of the year, of legislation needed to build a comprehensive national cybersecurity system.
