There is an ongoing war. 20% of the country is under occupation. America is under the control of a pro-Russian oligarch and his goons.
Under Ukrainian constitution, while martial law is in effect, elections cannot be held. Also, the ongoing Russian attacks on civilians make it even more problematic to organise elections with large gatherings.

As the war with Russia rages on, an overwhelming majority of 357 deputies on Wednesday supported the extension. It allows the country to continue mobilizing troops and suspends the election cycle.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly questioned Zelenskyy’s legitimacy after his term ended in 2024. But in line with the Ukrainian legislation, elections are impossible during martial law.
As peace talks led by the Trump administration created hopes for a potential ceasefire and eventual elections, some Ukrainian opposition politicians started criticizing Zelenskyy more openly.
Petro Poroshenko, a former president and leader of the largest opposition party, “European Solidarity,” said there was no doubt martial law should be extended, especially after deadly Russian strikes on Sumy and Kryvyi Rih this month.
But he accused Zelenskyy of attempting to strengthen his powers during martial law.
“I want to stress that we should recognize the obvious—the government has started to abuse martial law, using it not only to defend the country but to build an authoritarian regime,” Poroshenko said during parliamentary debates on Tuesday.
However, Poroshenko’s party overwhelmingly supported the extension of martial law, with only one lawmaker from the party voting against it.

What Ukraine should be saying to Trump:
“We would love to have elections. But first, you need to get the Russians to leave our country and stop attacking us. Go be the dealmaker who you claim to be.”
If anyone wants the elections to be hold, the Russia should cease all of it’s aggressions and terror campaign. Quite bloody simple.

Probably because they are still at war? Its not safe to try and have an election now and hell, many wouldnt be able to vote during the war as is
I don’t know how anyone can think they can hold elections. Russia already loves to target places with high population density, like few days ago. The carnage that election would yield, can you imagine that? It seems though, that president Trump can’t.
Doesn’t matter, America would still support Putin regardless if they held elections or not. Don’t give fascists an inch, they will stab you with a mile.
Oh no US pressure, let’s ignore it
Portion of the country can’t even vote since they are imprisoned and oppressed by Russia.
What do people expect them to do? Hey, have a bunch of citizens gather in neat orderly lines for several hours, while Russia will bomb those exact spots?
Besides, I agree theres issues to be had, and certainly critique and discussion warrented.
But what the fuck do you expect to do? Even the opposistion says “no, we shouldnt have an election right now”.
Zelenski literally said he’d step down if Russia agrees to the peace plan. This cant keep being on Ukraine, as Russia refuses to act according to its own proposals.
Trump needs to put more pressure on Ukraine. Maybe cut off all intelligence sharing.
