    1. I’d say this was worthless but that’s just my floccinaucinihilipilification showing

    2. In the old says before computers, I would hate to have to keep spelling out my address on forms.

For Belgium it’s (“will be” … it’s complicated)

      Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht

      Wtf is this map.
So what, russia is Europe, but Ukraine and the rest of central-Eastern European countries aren’t? Someone did a tiny bit of research and gave up?

I can assure you there are huge ass names in those countries too. If you do something do it properly.

This has me wondering: what is the shortest with and without accents?

    6. curinanco on

Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav is the longest in Czechia. It is a compound town consisting of two former towns. The longest ‘single’ place name is Nová Ves u Nového Města na Moravě.

Just a heads up: the Welsh alphabet has a number of “double characters” as a single letter so “ch”, “dd”, “ff”, “ng”, “ll”, “ph”, “rh”, and “th” each can be a single letter.

      —–

Edit: ‘”double characters” as a single letter’ are called “digraphs” which I can not help but sounding out in a Welsh accent.

      Everyday is a learning day.

Longest names in Europe. Fails to give names to 50% of the countries in Europe

Did some research and a place name in Denmark can not legally exceed 40 letters.

Something bureaucratic about the standard size of a road sign, and the size of the font used for that sign.

In short if there is more than 40 letters, it will not fit on the sign.

In Ukraine it will be Petropavlivska Borshchahivka(26 letters in Ukrainian). But in the near future it will be merged as part of Kyiv

In polish you don’t separate compound sounds like ‘cz’, it’s like separating ‘peaches’ in English as ‘peac-hes’

The real name of L.A. in California: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río Porciúncula

    13. French name isn’t a “place”. It is the name of an administrative entity that encompasses several towns.

**Muckanaghederdauhaulia** looks much more digestible in its original Irish form- **Muiceanach idir Dhá Sháile**. It literally translates to “**Pig Marsh between Two Inlets**” which I think is sweet for how descriptive it is.

The hyphens are incorrectly placed in the German and Dutch names.

    16. ItchyPlant on

I’m afraid Italian and Portugal ones don’t really qualify due to split words.

    17. Not even close in Poland, though?

Since multi worded names are allowed, it’d be:

      Wólka Sokołowska koło Wólki Niedźwiedzkiej

That one has dubious status though, se we have to settle for something like:

      Niewodnica Nargilewska Kolonia

      Przedmieście Szczebrzeszyńskie

      Sobienie Kiełczewskie Pierwsze

    18. Czechia: Nová Ves u Nového Města na Moravě

translated literally as “New Village by the New Town in Moravia”

    19. Bertus85 on

Almost correct for the Netherlands, the village with the longest name is Gasselterboerveenschemond. One extra letter.

    20. KirovianNL on

The longest in the Netherlands without spaces or hyphens is Gasselterboerveenschemond, with hyphens and spaces it’s Westerhaar-Vriezenveensewijk.

    21. H_Doofenschmirtz on

At least for Portugal, it isn’t correct.

From the top of my head, I can think of a few places with longer names, like “Vila Real de Santo António”, “Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo”, “São Cristóvão de Mondim de Basto”, “Santo António de Mixões da Serra”, “Aldeia Galega da Merceana” and “Santa Iria da Ribeira de Santarém”
