Expecting people on houses worth less than 550k (i.e. the average price in Dublin) to buy you a house for you in Rathimes for 700k is a bit much.

I too would like a council funded house in an upmarket Dublin area

The idea that DCC would pay €700k to buy a property to house two people is literally insane.
I’m very much in favour of the state building more property but this would be an incredible waste of limited resources.

Tbf, the council shouldn’t be paying 700k for a 2 bed room, probably poor energy rated bungalow to be used as a council house.

The problem with all these schemes is that they involve government competing with private buyers for housing but does nothing to create more houses.
Surely having a maximum the council will pay is a good thing? Rathmines is an incredibly sought after area, it does not seem smart to force taxpayers to pay top dollar for property in areas like this.

Why is state buying buildings? It doesn’t make sense, unless it’s derelilict for example

The whole problem is the government is massively disrupting the market anyway.

Good. Common sense prevails over insanity
They say it was a modest home. Show me the home

It was the only place in Dublin that would accept her…? Wasn’t feeling very sorry her before reading that. Now I think she must be a complete see-unit.

““I offered to contribute to the shortfall through a local authority home loan, but it was refused,” the woman said.
“I can contribute privately, but somehow that’s not allowed publicly”
Anyone knows what is the reason for this?

“The tenant also offered a shared-ownership proposal to the council to make up the €200,000 shortfall, which was rejected under the current terms of the Tenant in Situ scheme.”
I can’t quite find the edges of it but does it rub anyone else up the wrong way that someone who can somehow put together the means to put €200,000 towards a house is having their rent paid to live in Rathmines?

>Members of Community Action Tenants Union (Catu), have [launched a petition](https://my.uplift.ie/petitions/make-tenant-in-situ-scheme-work-for-individuals-and-families-facing-eviction?source=whatsapp-share-button&utm_medium=myuplift&utm_source=whatsapp&share=96558545-5f0c-44b8-8b1e-43b384b19d1e)calling for the establishment of a mandatory Tenant in Situ purchase policy, so that if a tenant qualifies for social housing and their landlord is selling, the council must purchase the property.
Is it just me or is this incredibly dumb by CATU?
