Can they not just elect a Pope through a sort of song or dance contest. Spice things up a bit. Maybe an Elvis impersonation contest.

He’s not the Interim Pope, as you’d imagine an Interim President or Interim PM. He, and the other Cardinals, keep things ticking over until a new Pope is in place. He won’t be leading the Church proper, won’t be proglimating new laws, decrees, teachings, guidance etc.

Being under 80 and a Cardinal, he will be in the Conclave and will be eligible for election but from all the (non-Irish) commentary I’ve read, his name hasn’t been mentioned as *papabile* albeit no one truly knows who’s in the running. General congregations will be held among the College of Cardinals, and after the funeral those general congregations will turn their attention to discussions as to what we need in the next Pope. I believe those general congregations include those Cardinals older than 80, ineligible to vote.

I would recommend The Pillar to those with a genuine interest in all of this, as they are excellent in their explainers, analysis, news and commentary on it all.
