A powerful earthquake has occurred, also felt in Istanbul.

According to AFAD’s statement, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2. It struck at 12:49 PM and had a depth of 6.92 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt across all cities along the coast of the Marmara Sea. Following the tremor, large numbers of people took to the streets in many districts of Istanbul.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Uraloğlu stated: “Our initial inspections have not revealed any damage or adverse situations on highways, airports, trains, or metro lines.”

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Kurum is heading to Istanbul to conduct investigations related to the earthquakes.

**AFAD: Do not enter risky buildings**
In a statement, AFAD said: “Do not enter damaged structures after the earthquake. Stay away from risky buildings. Use SMS and internet-based messaging apps for communication.”

**Statement from Erdoğan**
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a statement following the earthquake that shook Istanbul.
“We are monitoring developments. Best wishes to our nation,” he said.

IMM released the following statement:
“No serious incidents have been reported so far regarding the earthquake in Istanbul. Our management team is urgently gathering at the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) to oversee the entire process. We will provide further updates.”

**Statement from Minister Yerlikaya**
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya said that all teams from AFAD and related institutions have started field assessments in response to the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul.
In a post on social media, Yerlikaya stated:
“A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has occurred off the coast of Silivri in the Marmara Sea. The quake was also felt in neighboring provinces. All teams from AFAD and relevant institutions have begun field assessments. I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the quake. May God protect our country and nation from disasters.”

**12:51 PM – April 23, 2025**
**Magnitude 4.4 aftershock**
At 12:51 PM, a 4.4 magnitude aftershock occurred in Istanbul.
According to AFAD, the epicenter was in the Marmara Sea, off the coast of Istanbul’s Büyükçekmece district.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers and was also felt in neighboring provinces.

**12:40 PM – April 23, 2025**
**Initial quake was off the coast of Silivri**
At 12:13 PM, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck in the Marmara Sea.
According to AFAD, the epicenter was off the coast of Istanbul’s Silivri district, and the quake occurred at a depth of 6.99 kilometers.

After the initial tremor, Professor Dr. Naci Görür posted on X:

“Around noon, a magnitude 4.0 quake occurred off the coast of Silivri. The quake took place in the Kumburgaz Fault zone. This fault is locked and is accumulating energy, occasionally triggering small quakes. Its location is significant—we need to stay alert. The Kumburgaz Fault is under pressure.”

Post-quake notifications are constantly coming to my phone app. That is probably a good sign that the earthquake hopefully follows a normal de-escalation pattern
