Look how long it has taken to introduce red light cameras that can snap a license plate. Be funny if we end up with facial recognition cameras faster.

Using facial recognition to match cctv images to mug shots will be a complete game changer for solving thefts and burglaries as well as some more serious crimes.

    5. A technology that can be defeated by a hoodie and a scarf over the mouth hmmmmm….

      Well, well, well.

This is a step too far for me. Why are we embracing a technology that has raised massive ethical and justice issues around its use and implementation. It is just to seem tough on crime with no regard to the consequences or the tribunals and compensation claims down the road?

There was an Oireachtas hearing on this last year. A computer scientist from TCD, considered to be the leading international expert, said there is no evidence that this can be implemented without major ethical beaches. So why are we doing it? What does the minister know that the experts don’t?

Hopefully this means something more than, “it’ll be ready to go just as soon as it is published by the British government”

They’ll need wide angle lenses for our big Irish heads.

Hmmm I wonder which murderous blood drenched country they’ll be buying this off.

      Stars&Stripes or a Star&Stripes?

      Good.

Having been tangentially involved in the video analysis part of a Garda investigation, I’m very aware of the _hours_ of manpower that can be wasted manually trawling through video footage. Retrospective facial recognition would immediately expedite that process.

I don’t see any downside to using technology to speed up a process the Gardai _already_ do manually. You are arriving at the exact same outcome, just quicker.

Real-time facial recognition is a very different matter, but that’s not what is being proposed.

Funny they can’t do housing but they can spy on us. Interesting this is after their bare faced corruption the last few years.
