Govt: the factors around the underdelivery of houses in ireland are complex; short term letting, complex tax systems, lack of tradesmen, planning constraints.
US: so ban airbnb, reform the tax system, put edcatio supports in place for a new generation of tradespeople, and reform the planning system
Govt: Woah Woah Woah, we never said any of these things caused the crisis, just that they added to complexity – besides we’re busy arguing over whether the healey rae ministers are in the government or not.
‘It can’t be fixed overnight’
Simon Harris talking about housing again. When will we actually start building?
The linguistic gymnastics in the both the coverage of this and the report itself are unbelievable.
For the first time on my life I’m gonna say… Simon Harris is right. Nobody, literally nobody, has suggested that short term lets were the root cause of the rental crisis.
This report is answering a question that nobody asked. It even acknowledges that “This does not mean that Airbnb activity has not had a detrimental impact on the PRS in specific local markets”
What are we even talking about? If there’s a housing shortage then we should try to ensure that the housing we do have is used for housing people.
Its more the long term rental of hotels and buying up of private housing by the government that’s the problem. Airbnb is but a drop in the ocean compared to what the government has competed to buy and rent against buyers and renters and hoovered it all up using the tax money of those very people they are causing the to lose out bidding against them.
Well I suppose we could form an interdepartmental committee to examine a proposal to monitor the possibility of building more houses. The result of which, when published in 18 months’ time, will allow the government to decide the steps to necessary to address the issue, taking all things to account and not committing to anything precipitate or reactionary.
Of course it isn’t Simon. The continued failure to do anything other than pay lip service to housing in this country by your party that have now been in Government for nearly 20 years at this stage is at the root cause of it.
Why does he look like someone pissed in his cornflakes
