They did not split the world. It was an agreement between the parties on who can go where or conquer what.

Think of it like one of those mafia movies where two gang leaders settle a dispute and establish their respective territorial limits. That does not mean third parties can’t intervene or that such and such parts of the city belong to gang X.

Furthermore, Tordesillas strictly concerned the Atlantic. The antimeridian was something that was brought up much later, when they were starting to sail the Pacific, and the dispute was more or less settled in the treaty of Zaragoza (1529)

Its Funny That Brazil exists because they made that treaty without knowing where the landmasses really are.

Back when Portugal owned England, the nordics, Russia and Japan…in your dreams. Misleading map.

    7. Quite hard that Australia could have been split between Portugal and Spain in 1494 when the first western person to set foot on it, Willem Janszoon, went there first in 1606.

    8. Spain: “Okay we’ll have have South America”

Portugal: “No way, Jose. Brazilian women have the best bums”

Spain: “Okay you can keep Brazil – we’re more interested in the wine anyway”

    9. No one honoured their words. Portugal got Brazil and Spain got Philippines.
