I think it’s fair enough they get close to market rate. We want the best people possible running these places.

Bosses are in line for huge pay raises and bonuses while employees are only getting the boot. Nothing ever changes.

Commercial semi-states are supposed to deliver both a service (like ports, airports, postal system etc) and usually a profit, or just not big losses the taxpayer has to subsidise. They compete for talent with private sector bodies here and abroad – plenty of commercial port/airport/delivery companies (etc) out there in the world. Marking the pay of people at these semi states to the market makes a great deal of sense.

Government refusing to look at performance related bonuses (recommended in the report but not being taken forward) is short sighted. Driven by perception rather than results. If bonuses don’t help get good performance, why are they the norm in the private sector? (Answers on the back of a postcard, and there are a lot of bad bonus systems, but in general a good performance pay system leads to more aligned shareholder/management results). Ironically in some places, staff below the CEO have performance bonuses but the CEO doesn’t.

You can read the actual report here: [https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-public-expenditure-ndp-delivery-and-reform/publications/review-of-remuneration-of-chief-executive-officers-in-commercial-state-bodies/](https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-public-expenditure-ndp-delivery-and-reform/publications/review-of-remuneration-of-chief-executive-officers-in-commercial-state-bodies/)

Who cares? Who, literally, cares? Because the Irish public certainly don’t. They’ll whinge, take it and then do nothing as usual. If there was an election in the morning FG and FF would be straight back in.
