NGS is unfit for purpose and the amount of fearmongering they do to maintain their monopoly over gender affirming care is gross. Government need to pull the finger out, tell them to fuck themselves and give more power to GPs to make these calls. Even just giving GPs authority to prescribe hormones and leaving NGS with more invasive procedures would help waiting lists so much.

      >The letters, seen by The Journal Investigates, state that the NGS does “not recommend” that GPs monitor hormone concentrations if asked by a transgender patient, as they are “not proven to risk manage care in this clinical scenario”. The letters add that other blood tests can be provided.

      ..

      >For those receiving healthcare within the NGS, its website states that hormone levels should be monitored every three to six months for the first few years on HRT.

So the NGS does it but doesn’t think other GPs need to. It’s downright unethical, equivalent to not treating people for complications from heroin or any other illegal drug because they shouldn’t have it.

I fully understand the perspective of people who are concerned about young people transitioning and people who want to protect women’s spaces but they always seem to be so tunnel visioned that they inevitably just become transphobic.

Take the issue of public spaces that’s so popular in the UK. Let’s say trans women are banned from women’s spaces. What about trans men? Are they are now expected to use women’s spaces? A fully transitioned and male presenting person using a changing room for women? Who would be comfortable with that? Nobody. So now they can’t go into women’s spaces either? Where do they go? There’s nowhere left for them. They simply have to stop existing in public spaces to make these people happy.

And these tunnel visioned people are the type we have making the decisions for trans healthcare from the state.

This is an unfortunate reality for many trans people in Ireland. While a lot of trans people try to get medication through private means, not everyone can afford the costs so that leaves DIY as the only way of getting life-saving care.

If you are someone who thinks DIY is dangerous then this article should be a good indicator on who to blame for so many people going that route. Best way to stop people from DIY is to disband NGS and change the current model of care.

    4. If you can get your bloods done at the GP. And then said GP can review the results and prescribe you medicine for cholesterol, or blood pressure what’s the difference between that and hormones?

In many cases the hormones can literally turn someone who has such dysphoria about their body that they’re in a state of depression into a whole new person.

So let the GPs handle it. Why does some big organisation have to come in and tell people they are or aren’t trans? Who are they to decide. Most people know what they feel, and their feelings are valid. Yeah sure sometimes a bit of therapy to help get through the murky waters of “maybe it’s all in my head” is necessary.

But some people know instantly. Their egg cracks. And they are ready. Some of us still cling to our beard like it’s a security blanket and aren’t ready to come out of our eggs because we don’t want to hurt our families.

But either way. A GP should be able to write the prescription, monitor your levels, and if needed and you’ve got the cash, point you in the direction of surgical options.

The one adult I know who is actually transitioning has found it so difficult they’ve just gone black market for hrt.

IMO, if you are an adult, there should be essentially zero barriers. Are you clearly in a manic mental health crisis? No? Off you go. It doesn’t matter if it’s a rash decision, a poorly thought out decision, a well planned well reasoned decision, the best decision ever supported by the pope – as an adult you should be allowed do whatever you want with your body.

If you think bodily autonomy is a right, as any sensible person must, and not merely bodily integrity, then you must allow self direction in matters of the body.

When it comes to kids, that decision apparatus extends to the guardians and is gatekeept by doctors. That’s fine, but the doctors in question should be just gatekeeping enough to be sure the child and guardians have been adequately informed of the medical consequences.

Beyond that, we don’t know enough to go around making hard lines anywhere. I’d rather err on the side of permissive.
