In Eastern Europe, communism is often equated with Nazism due to the terror and repression people experienced. But in Italy, communism had a very different face. Leaders like Enrico Berlinguer, a Sardinian and head of the Italian Communist Party, opposed Soviet totalitarianism and promoted Eurocommunism, a democratic, independent form of communism. Italian communists played a key role in advancing rights like public healthcare, divorce, abortion, and protections for workers.

In a ideal world communism would be ideal. The problem is, in my opinion, that it gives to much power to the ruling elites. Can you imagine some current politician like Trump having control over the whole economy and housing? It would be horrific.

Come in Greece. You’ll pretty much come across communist banners in every city. The communist party of Greece is pretty strong. Actually the biggest trade union in Greece (PAME) is run by communists and the third biggest city of our country has a communist mayor (he’s doing a great job)

So much ignorance in these comments… I come from en ex soviet country, and I’m not a fan for sure. But this flag represents way more than gulags and oppression. It stands for workers rights, civil rights, and freedom in general.
communism, in the West Europe, meant a very different thing. Italy almost became communist, had the US not intervened (as it did in Chile).
Again, I’m not a fan, on the contrary, but seeing yanks commenting annoys me. Educate yourself

Can someone explain to me why it would be advantageous to have a political party that directly controls all businesses in a country? Also private property, even of a small shop or of an apartment, would be illegal.

Also the communist party of Italy was the strongest communist party in the West until the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
You can look at their elections results. They always came second with their percentages ranging from 25-35%. The communist party of Italy was huge, especially in places like Tuscany which always voted Red.

If you think that’s weird, I live in Lisbon, Portugal, where the Communist Party headquarters is next to the Gucci store on the most expensive street in the country.

The regionalist/separatist movements in Europe tend to be left-wing, with the notable exceptions of Flanders and Padania. Just try to visit Corsica, Euskadi, and Catalonia and the sentiments are similar. The left-wing in Ireland, Sinn Fein, is also highly nationalistic. They proudly use Irish and change their English surnames (like Kennedy) into an Irish-sounding one (like Ó Cinnéide).
