Thanks to erdogan and his band of chimpanzee supporters.

      Erdoganomics.

Trump is doing something similar these days by trying to force the FED to cut interest rates, at a time when the dollar is already under pressure and treasury bond yields are high (-> investors ask for a premium to buy US debt).

A persistent insistence of having Erdogan as number one is the likely cause of this depreciation of the Lira. He has meticulously taken control of every aspect of state and government control; the executive branch, the legislative, the military, the judiciary.

The sole element of the Turkish state which he does not control is the economy. Or, the Turkish central bank was under his supervision. If I remember correctly he appointed a ‘neutral’ chief of the central bank some time ago, a lady with a U.S. degree. How is she handling these events?

That’s what happens when your economic theory is dominated by religion

Turkish economy is collapsing, or more specifically it is imploding.

Those who are in power cause this intentionally f just to avoid the political cost of saving the economy. This way, they will be able to hold on to the power while the people suffer slowly.

The Euro has decreased in purchasing power over the same time period. So this comparison hides a significant chunk of the loss in value of the Turkish Lira.

You want to go the other way around – how many euros you can buy with 1 Lira; the chart will show the decrease and will be red.

The chart looks like the lira is increasing.

I still felt that I got robbed during my holidays in Turned last year.

Amazing country, people and food… But new York prices. No kidding, I also went to New York last year and the dining prices were the same if not extremely similar. It made me wonder how the average Turkish citizen could afford to eat out.

At this rate, by the time I visit Turkey again, a salad will be costing 3 million.

Honestly i do not know how the Turkish people survive. I went to Istanbul recently and things/services in many cases are a lot more expensive than in Western Europe while they earn 5x less.

I remember the times when it was something like 1€ = 1,8-2TL and I’m not even old.

    12. Internal_Sun_9632 on

And somehow its really expensive to go on holidays over there now? Whats up with that?

Thats what happens when your economy is based around tourism and foreigners spending their currency.

I went to Istanbul and the guide half-jokingly asked us to pay in Euros instead, because the Lira would half in valuea before he’d arrive back at his house.

I’ve got lots of lovely Lira, now the Deutsch Mark is getting dearer…

A good answer for everyone who looks at Trump and thinks “well, surely he and his supporters can’t be willing to endure THAT much economic damage for the sake of ideology.”

Turks labor have been devaluated in 10 years with -93%

    18. If you think this is bad, just wait for a few more weeks or months 🙂

I promise you the dollar will reach 40 or 45 soon enough, and the central bank will lose all of its money.

May the ones voted for him drown in their own shit.

That’s an exponential curve so in 10 more years it’s really worthless

The date 1 May 2015 was when I was doing my exchange semester in Europe as a student from Turkey. Back then my mother, who was a civil servant, was easily able to afford my living expenses in Europe just by herself. Now 10 years later, 10 years more senior, it’s impossible for her to do the same for my brother.

Leave Erdogan alone!!! He is trying out the art of the deal.

The really interesting thing here is to see how irrelevant currency value is to daily life. People always stress about this but a weak or strong currency will not change your life in any meaningful way
