      Although Labor Day originated in the United States, the Soviet Union quickly co-opted the holiday to serve its own propaganda. Starting in 1917, Soviet workers were required to attend May 1st parades celebrating rights that, in reality, often existed only on paper.

      In this post, we take a closer look at what life was actually like for the Soviet working class beyond the staged May Day celebrations of the regime that globally marketed itself as the workers’ paradise.
