More Donegal people have been to Spain than have been to Cork.

    2. JONFER--- on

      What is their point?

It’s often cheaper to go abroad depending on what part of the country you are travelling from, the weather is a lot better, the driving is a hell of a lot better, and a Spanish person with no English can be easier to understand than a rural Donegal farmer!

      >More than 1 in 5 would like to visit Donegal for the first time.

I.e. 80% of people surveyed have no interest in visiting Donegal.

    4. 087brain21 on

I live in cork but have been to Donegal and Spain numerous times what kind of person does that make me?

    5. Express-Survey-1179 on

Went for a weekend away with the missus back during covid and no travel, we looked at Donegal’s every option to stay was extortionate so we just went to Portrush instead which was half of the price but twice as nice.

Imagine blaming people for not wanting to stay in Ireland when it doesn’t offer the same weather experience as Spain / Portugal but commands a much higher fee ?

    6. HibernianMetropolis on

Well yeah, it’s a much better holiday destination in pretty much every way

    7. Aggressive-Lawyer-87 on

As someone who’s not much of a nature lover, I really couldn’t think of a reason to bother going. I’ve been to Mayo, Kerry and Galway so I can’t imagine it looks that different from other western counties and the price of pints isn’t miles off what I can get in my local.

Surfing if you’re into it, I guess?

    8. Illustrious_Panic191 on

They’re missing out, ta Dhún na nGall class, agus táim ag rá sin mar dub!

    9. Maybe if there was a rail line to Donegal, more people would go 🤔

    10. mightymunster1 on

Did a 2 week roadtrip starting in Donegal and the place was amazing, some of the best beaches in the country

    11. soenkatei on

And do what? Stay where ? How would I even get there ?

Would love to go but I’m not made of money

Is it only me or the “article” is literally only a few words with no links to the data source?

      > Irish people are more likely to have visited Spain than Donegal. While 74% of Irish people holiday abroad at least once a year, almost half of the people in Ireland want to see and explore more of their own country. More than 1 in 5 would like to visit Donegal for the first time.
The findings have been revealed in a survey by AirBnB.

Never been to Donegal myself, but I would imagine that lower prices and better weather are incentives to visit Spain instead.

    13. sparksAndFizzles on

It’s cheaper and Irish people holiday to get sunny weather. It’s about *escaping to the sun*

As spectacular as many parts of Ireland are, that’s not what a lot of Irish tourists want.

    14. To be fair, Spain is a lot closer than Donegal. I think you need a space shuttle to get to Donegal.

    15. Excellent-Many4645 on

Because for the same price or less you can get a holiday abroad? Not to mention the distance, I’ve never been to Cork but it’s at the other end of the island for me I’d say most people have that same attitude.

    16. Hankman66 on

I’ve been to Spain a few times. Donegal only once – and it rained so much we could barely get out of the car. 😵‍💫

    17. AhhhSureThisIsIt on

It takes about 4 hours to get from Dublin to Donegal, but 2 hours to get from Dublin to Madrid.

No surprise, really. If they had a train service, it would have more tourists.

    18. Professional_Elk_489 on

Well you can easily get to Spain from Ireland so that helps

    19. Dependent_Survey_546 on

I’m from the other end of the country, it’s actually nearly as fast to fly to Spain as it is to drive to donegal.

Visited Malin head last autumn. Spent 7 and a half hours in the car to get there.

What’s the point of swapping grey covered skies for grey covered skies on another part of the island?

    21. KinderEggSkillIssue on

Welp, I’ve been to Spain 8 times and Donegal once….
      Damn…

    22. Taifuwiddie5 on

I think this highlights a domestic tourism problem.

      – hotels are expensive
      – no high speed train or train at all to get there
      – bad overall infrastructure to get there if you are pushed.
      – once there, lack of things to do.

    23. exposed_silver on

Well I can nearly get to Spain faster than to Donegal from Meath, I’ve only been there twice. I’ve been in Spain for over 10 years.

    24. qwerty_1965 on

      What the feck was that?

I’ll tell you what it was. A successful attempt by a local radio station to get a 100 word stub discussed on Ireland’s top internet user space.

I see you Big Highland Radio.

    25. Hyltrgrl on

Doesn’t surprise me! My partner said he’s visited more places in the country after meeting me, not Irish, than he ever did growing up here. Only counties we haven’t been to are Donegal and Kerry.

    26. mannybianco7 on

Was out on Tory Island once with the old job about 20 years ago. Was good craic and great fishing. ‘The King of Tory’ was there to meet you and give you the once over when the ferry arrives into the harbor too!

    27. RoseyOneOne on

This makes sense, I mean have you *been* to Donegal?

      Oh, er, I guess not.

    28. Dookwithanegg on

It’s easier to get to Spain than it is to Donegal for the majority of the country.

I can get the bus to the airport and then get on a plane and my total travel time will be less than 2 hours. Maybe a little longer if I want checked luggage but other than that I don’t have to drive the bus or fly the plane, I can just sit down and relax while the travelling happens to me.

Or I can drive to Donegal. 5 hours. 6 if I’m going North Donegal. Maybe I can find someone to drive with and we each do half the journey.

    29. notpropaganda73 on

And long may it continue, don’t want the rest of you fuckers ruining our beaches

    30. stevewithcats on

Ah Donegal , nothing like a coaler Passat with a welded diff sailing through the air to the sounds of 4:4 techno as the sun sets behind a diesel laundering shed.

    31. danny_healy_raygun on

I’ve been to both. People are making the right choice.

    32. It feels like when it comes to investment and infrastructure, Donegal seems to be left behind a lot, which is a shame as it’s lovely.
