Seems like a man who can’t take responsibility when wrong

In May 2023, the Supreme Court ruled by a 4-1 majority that the HSE had acted fairly and reasonably when it suspended the consultant and recommended that he should be dismissed from his former job at St Luke’s Hospital.

The previous year, Prof O’Sullivan settled a long-running legal battle with the HSE over his suspension on foot of a complaint made in 2019 about his use of unauthorised and unapproved actions and procedures on the five female patients.

Prof O’Sullivan currently works at the First IVF fertility clinic in Clane, Co Kildare.

He literally experimented on women without their knowledge or consent, exposed them to health risks to the extent they had to get tested for diseases like HIV, and abused their trust when he was supposed to be taking care of them. This dirtbag should never be allowed near a patient again, it’s shocking that he is still working in medicine. Wonder do his current patients know his history?

      >The chairperson of the inquiry, Jill Long, said the fitness-to-practise committee also noted that medical records contained no reference to any consent having been obtained from any of the five female patients in advance of the procedure.

Considering he inserted an abdominal rectal pressure catheter into these women, I really don’t understand how this isn’t simply considered assault.

For anyone wondering what the ‘research’ was: he wanted to see if certain gynaecological procedures could be done without a speculum, so he inserted a catheter and pressure pad into five women there for a hysteroscopy without authorization or consent.

Nursing staff raised the alarm, expressing concerns about the risk of infection. The women had to be tested for HIV afterward.

I believe he also used ‘non-hospital’ equipment.

Insane behaviour. God complex at its finest. Imagine if every doctor took the approach of “I wonder what would happen if I just…” during surgical procedures.

There’s a place for research and innovation and it’s in controlled, well-designed studies with informed, consenting participants.

Hopefully some of the IVF patients in First Fertility Clinic in Clane will see this. If they’re looking for reviews of First Fertility Clinic they should really read about this. The way First Fertility Clinic in Clane have hired this guy.

It seems to me like there’s some kind of systemic or cultural issue in the health system here. This is the second huge scandal around unauthorised, non-consented to experimentation. The other being the shocking situation with the springs in the spinal implants.

Also, I don’t quite understand how the hell someone exposed someone to HIV risk.

It warrants more than just superficial investigation – needs to be major reviews.

We are very quick to self-congratulate here about how standards are very high etc etc. Are they though? you’d wonder.

If I had a penny for every male medical professional in Ireland who exercised a God Complex by assaulting or experimenting on women without their knowledge or consent…
