One of the several places that have been claimed as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, by the way. Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo, who met the man and was raised alongside the Admiral’s children, writes this:

*And I say that Christopher Columbus, for what I have gathered from men of his nation, was a native of the province of Liguria, which is in Italy, where there is the city and polity of Genoa: some say that from Savona, and others that he was from a small town or village called Nervi, which is towards the Levant, two leagues from the city of Genoa; and it is deemed truer that he was from a place called Cogoleto, close to the city of Genoa itself.*
