Cari piloti belgi,

Questo segno significa che puoi guidare con velocità fino a 70 km/h. Quando le circostanze lo consentono, è possibile guidare liberamente circa 70 km/h e non 45-50 km/h. Potrebbe sembrare 50, ma non lo è. È 70.

A lot of agressive drivers in Belgium that love to tailgate.
Drivers in the Netherlands are way better.

I’d just like to add that local speed limits of 50 actually do exist, and they start AT the signage, not 5 kilometers before.

    3. Alexthegreatbelgian on

Conversly: the same sign with “50” means you should not go 70.

    4. absurdherowaw on

I think much bigger issue is people thinking that sign “30” or “50” means they can go 70 km/h

    5. Say all you want, but this sign also doesn’t say you HAVE to drive at 70km/h

If someone drives at 50 it might annoy you, but it’s not an infringement

    6. Downtown-Place8670 on

But that also means, since there is a limit, you can’t go 90 or more. I prefer someone going 50 you can overtake instead of someone going 100 and almost crash into the oncoming traffic.

Voor de mensen die kanten Beveren wonen:

De baan van de Paradisio/Complex/Baia/… Mag je dus 70!

    8. The sign with red border and a number inside means you shouldn’t go faster than the number inside but it doesn’t require you to go faster than any speed, except if you’re causing a traffic jam.

People who think people need to drive faster are just egotistical ego maniacs that feel entitled to stuff.

    9. Yes but then all of a sudden they put 50 in a hidden place with a speed camera and bomb een boete.

    10. The sign means it is safe to drive maximum 70km/h. Not minimum. If anyone feels safer driving slower, that’s fine. If you get annoyed by it, it’s your problem, not theirs. I get also annoyed when there’s a tractor in front of me on a 90km/h speed limit road, but I never blame the farmer.

    11. What I find much more annoying are the idiots who go “signs aren’t for me, I’m just gonna drive 60 kph everywhere”.

    12. The same for 90km/h. I see people standing at 60/70 km/h on a quite long road, that i use everyday to go to work, but there’s ALWAYS someone being slow, making a line behind them, and there’s no way to overtake on said road…

Was in Nieuwpoort and around recently, and as a German driver I found the speed limits super confusing, especially outside towns. In town it’s usually 50 or sometimes 30 – all good. But once you’re out, it gets weird.

Sometimes it jumped to 70 right after the town sign without any sign. Other times it stayed 50 even though there was no sign. My car’s system and CarPlay weren’t helpful at all.

With all the speed cameras, I didn’t want to mess up. Is there a general rule in Belgium for speed limits when there are no signs?

    14. Fun fact, this also applies outside of the “bebouwde kom” in Flanders. It’s not because there are no signs that explicitly say “70” you need to drive 50 km/h.

    15. vitten23 on

Ah yes, the sign were the old farts drive 60 and then it the 50-zone they still drive 60.

    16. One-Neighborhood-843 on

It doesn’t mean neither that you should be right at 70 once you’ve reached it.

You’re allowed to speed up to 70 once you’ve passed it. Before it, you have to keep the previous max. speed.

    17. Where are you driving that people aren’t interpreting this as 90km/h?

    18. kennytherenny on

I’ve noticed that there’s a type of driver that just drives 50 everywhere.

      Zone 70 –> 50

      Zone 50 –> 50

      Zone 30 –> 50

      It baffles my mind honestly.

    19. AttentionLimp194 on

I prefer to drive 50 when I believe the sign is not appropriate for the area. There are many Flemish villages in the outskirts of Brussels that have a 50 limit but the streets are so narrow I rarely exceed 45

    20. LunarisTheOne on

Dear Belgian drivers. When you are allowed to drive up to 70kmph it doesn’t mean it is always a good idea to do so. People disregarding this particular type of wisdom are the cause of many many many traffic signs with varying speed limits over the course of the road.

    21. Bender352 on

It is up to 70 max. It does not say you have to drive between 68 and 70km/h

    22. michilio on

It is however completely legal to drive 50 there. 80 is the speed *limit*, not the mandatory or advised speed.. afaik only highways have a mandatory minimum speed (of 70km/h, which is insanely slow and dangerous to do)

Brb, off to go drive 40 in a 70, just in the hopes of pissing you off.

    23. It’s the **maximum** speed you can have. If someone is driving at 30 then this person is allowed to do so. _Perhaps_ it can be seen as “obstructing traffic” by the law enforcement but that one is rarely applied as it depends from the situation and the enforcer in question.

Such people are really a rarity. I’ve seen much more occurrences of people doing the otherwise, not respecting the speed limit… They’re usually a reason why the speed limit got lowered in several places despite such roads being eligible to drive at the original (before the adaption, such as going from “70” to “50”, “70” is then the original one) speed limit

    24. Technical_Raccoon838 on

actually, the sign means you cannot drive FASTER than 70. Driving 45-50 here is, while annoying, perfectly legal to do so.
