“With Ireland’s population growing more than 10 times faster than the rest of Europe and home-building stagnating, inward migration will have to be lowered if there is any chance of matching housing supply with demand.”
– Dan O’Brien, Chief economist, Institute of International and European Affairs, senior fellow at UCD.

Population growth while our birth rate is below replacement……..
And you will still have people saying the crisis isn’t caused by immigration

Let’s all be honest here, migration or not, there is no will to address housing on a systemic level in this country. Migration is just a useful scapegoat, what was previously? Rain and bad weather?

Outside of major events like war and famine, populations tend to grow. If population growth is throwing a spanner in your plan for housing then you fucked up. Even being generous with considering the rate of growth, they’ve had about 25 years to think of something.

Should we slow migration down?

Our political system incentivises short term constituency politics over long term planning. It’s why we can’t plan or implement infrastructure effectively.

In defense of the government, who could have predicted that people moving to Ireland for work would want somewhere to live?!

It’s a factor yes, but we had a housing crisis even when we were suffering from mass emigration – it’s been an issue since the end of the recession.
What we need is a government to strongarm house building and planning, building communities with good levels of infrastructure and services.
For the past decade and a half it’s been a laissez-faire approach hoping the private sector will manage the issue which has failed. We’ve failed to spend the money allocated to housing, and are now on the cusp of another potential financial crisis, so we could soon lack both the money AND the willpower to fix it.

This is how they call it now: population growth.

When we don’t have enough houses to go around, we need to limit the number of people coming into the country, where possible. And it’s not just houses, it’s GPs, dentists, creche places, school places, special school places etc…

And then you have that, supposed, housing expert, Rory Hearne from the SocDems trying to constantly say there’s no correlation (seeing as it goes against his political beliefs).
