Pro-Russian hacker group NoName057 claimed responsibility for the cyber attack in Romania in a message published on Telegram on Sunday. They claim the attack in favor of the AUR candidate George Simion, who they say is “a possible ally of Vladimir Putin”.
“Presidential elections have started in Romania, where the leader of the nationalist party AUR, George Simion, is positioning himself as a possible ally of Vladimir Putin and is considered the favorite. We are not staying away from this event and are sending our DDOS attacks to Romania,” the hackers wrote on Telegram.
On Sunday, the websites of several public and media institutions were attacked by hackers. The NoName057 group was set up to attack Ukrainian targets, but lately they have been focusing on sabotaging European elections.
Among the websites attacked was antena3.ro.
Presidential election candidate Crin Antonescu wrote on Facebook that his campaign website has been targeted by pro-Russian hackers.
“The dark forces of extremism are trying to hold us back by the basest means. Don’t let them! Come out and vote! Vote for peace, for stability, for development, for the future. Romania, forward!”, Crin Antonescu wrote on Facebook.
The NoName057 group carries out its activity and communication through Telegram channels, where they claim their attacks, launch threats, mock victims and distribute informational or propagandistic content.
I just wonder why people would vote for someone who is basically a clone of the guy who was banned for trying to rig their elections…
Thats because they want to create chaos and undermine the way the elections are organized, so they can erode the trust in the democracy and elections
Every time a European country has elections now, all other countries need to cyber attack Russia so their hackers are busy. Also, how is this not viewed as an open attack? The russians are openly admitting it.
Russia has been doing this for 15 years and there has never been a response. They shut down Estonia’s internet. They demolished many companies in Ukraine and companies using their tax program. Losing Europe billions in this virus attack alone. They constantly attack websites and politicians online and no one seems to care. They even attacked Holland online via hacks when they kept bringing up that Russia blew up a passenger plane. Basically zero response to any of it.
We are talking about thousands of cases. And a handful of giant ones costing Europe billions. Unless Germany or France is hit no one will care it seems.
