The EU basically stole all their names, anthem and flag.

    2. Upset_Following9017 on

Wait until somebody tells you that the European Patent Office is independent from the European Union.

    3. kreteciek on

No, you’re not the only one. And I think it’d idiotic that such confusing names are allowed to coexist.

    4. tripleusername on

Omg, that’s “people’s front of judea vs judean people’s front” in real life.

    5. Samceleste on

It is confusing the first time you encounter it, and then you learn and know that these are different structures with different, but close, names.

    6. I never heard of the council of Europe, you can’t be confused if you don’t even know it exists

    7. Edward_the_Sixth on

No, it’s confusing for everyone, and it feels emblematic for the EU for it to be this unnecessarily complicated

    8. ninjamullet on

“In the European Council, we have to unite to fight our worst enemies.”

“True, sibling! Which one do you mean, US or Russia or maybe China?”

“Duh! The Council of Europe, of course!”

    9. Odd-Astronaut-2315 on

It’s even worse in Hungarian, one is called Európa Tanács the other is Európai Tanács. Yes only an “i” is the difference.

    10. Available-Doubt9813 on

You have to remember that Europe (the continent) and EU (union of countries within Europe) are differents and then it’ll become way less confusing, at least I think so!

    11. No-Control7641 on

please learn the differences this might come up in an epso test

    12. Hiro_Trevelyan on

Everyone thinks it’s very stupid and confusing.

Also they shouldn’t have to move between Strasbourg and Bruxelles all the time. As a selfish French asshole, I wish Strasbourg was the capital of European institutions since the city moved between France and Germany, it’s a great melting pot of Franco-German culture. But since Brussels won, let them move there permanently, once and for all.

    13. The European politician dictionary is like a morse code of Council and Concern, you just have to know how many and in which order they appear and you’ll be fine.

    14. aTaleForgotten on

Is it Alfredo’s Pizza? Or Pizza by Alfredo’s? Theres a big difference

    15. NORmannen10 on

They should really find a more differentiated name!

This is a mess in english, but it becomes an even larger mess when you try to translate into local languages as well.

    16. Jindujun on

Welcome the the EU and the french boner for not agreeing with the rest of europe.

This is also why the politicians move between Brussels and Strasbourg 12 times per year.
Costs a shit ton of money (about 115m euro per year) and has been suggested to be abolished numerous times.

    17. Quiet-Pressure4920 on

Not really, it was always very clear which one is which to me

    18. Imagine this but taught in upper secondary school. No one learned or understood anything lmao

    19. MadeOfEurope on

As someone that works EU adjacent (and has a doctorate which focuses on the EU), I still get confused!

    20. Only-Detective-146 on

Basically half of law studies in european law is this.

    21. Both Europe and Apple TV used the same naming agency. Cursed be its name .

    22. Tifoso89 on

Yes, it’s confusing, and it shows how disconnected European institutions are from the average EU citizen.

90% of Italians wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between European Parliament, European Commission, Council of the European Union and Council of Europe.

    23. GloomyFondant526 on

One is Euro Justice League and the other is Euro Super Friends. Pretty simple.

    24. thenonoriginalname on

I imagine it can be for some persons, since the” leave the council of Europe, no to the dictate of the judges of the ECHR” was one of the arguments of the Brexit.

Now UK is out of the EU and still in the Council of Europe…

    25. The only people confused about these simple things are the same ones who don’t understand the difference between Europe the continent and the European Union.

    26. The-Choo-Choo-Shoe on

I remember my friends thinking UK left Europe with Brexit and I had to explain to them that Europe and EU is not the same thing.

    27. LazzenRike on

The name is indeed confusing. Here is my method : think about “European” Council linked to “European” Union (when there is the word “European” you know the Council is from “European” Union), which is different with the name of Council of Europe

    28. In Danish we have:

      * *Det Europæiske Råd* (a part of the EU)
      * *Rådet for Den Europæiske Union* (another part of the EU)
      * *Europarådet* (not part of the EU)

    29. puredwige on

In Switzerland, we have “Conseil d’Etat”, which is a cantonal (state) government, and the “Conseil des Etats”, which is the upper chamber of parliament. So someone who was a state minister before becoming a senator, will be a “conseiller aux Etats, ancien conseiller d’Etat”

    30. Critical_Walk on

It was a way to double career possibilities for politicians. Your taxes should have been so much lower !

    31. MansJansson on

The Council of the EU should just be referred to as the Council of Ministers as we do in Sweden.
