For many people of North African origin living in Brussels, the daily pressure doesn’t come from the “Flemish far right” : it comes from conservative Islamic ideology present in the community.

While attacks from hooligans or racist extremists are rightly condemned, there’s silence when it comes to the social control imposed by religious norms: pressure on women to wear the hijab, the need to hide just to drink water during Ramadan, and the guilt and judgment tied to religious expectations.

These are not abstract issues, they affect daily life. Yet many progressive voices are reluctant to call out the Islamist far right, even though it often has more impact on people’s freedom and well-being than any distant extremist in Flanders.

This double standard needs to be addressed.
